I have been quiet of late, but I have been getting, fixing, and distributing bikes, using existing parts inventory. The donations have improved in quality; I have gotten more selective about what I will accept to refurbish. Just not enough time! I have had these two little girls' bikes in the garage for ages, ready to deliver except for cleanup. Both have threadbare tires.

I can see 20 18-wheelers on the highway, each with Its own fuel gulping diesel engine. Thats just the ones in sight this minute. I was involved in the creation of TOFC/COFC 55 frigging years ago. Trucking industry and oil industry fought it tooth and nail. Should have become THE standard long haul means decades ago.COFC is prevalent but only due to container ships
Been out of pocket for a while. I did get one of those 3 fixed and returned, then went into an unplanned shutdown. Many other responsibilities. But yesterday I finished the other two, plus a donation I received 2 weeks ago, plus one of two tiny tot bikes I got Monday (photo). Unfortunately, the places I will give them to are closed until Jan 6.
Picked up the three today. All look good. mechanically 100%, two 26" adult, one 24" youth.The 24 needed a rear tire and tube. I had a salvaged wheel with both behind the repair stand. I removed wheel,tire while my helper* got the replacement off its rim. Mounted, inflated. So all 3 have good rubber. All could use brake tuning, lube moving parts.
*Such a delightful kid. Helped load and unload, handed me tools. She asked to come, just wanted to get away for a while.

My garage cleanup is almost done. With only 4 bikes awaiting refurbishing I have space to get to the shelves to triage 7 years accumulation of salvaged parts. One trip to metal recycling away from sanity!

#Bikes #bicycle #refugeesTook it for my standard test ride: up a hill by my house in lowest gear, work thru gears as road levels out, make a u turn and come back in highest, hit brakes hard at my driveway, swoop in*, load it on the rack on truck. Then I sprayed chain and all joints in derailleurs and brakes with Blaster(tm)** and delivered it.
*It is kind of a thrill to do that test on a bike that came in so dead.

>🧵 both derailleurs, rear brake. Cable was routed wrong, couldn't make it crisp. Rebounded in slow motion. Plus everything stiff.Then the front brake. An older design, center pull caliper. Brake shoe upside down, worn crazily. Found a salvaged shoe but its stem would not fit this mounting stud. Ended up using grinding wheel to. make the stem a bit slimmer. Put it together, balanced, trued the wheel, and it works like a charm. Bike is now good as new. Silk purse. Except dirty.

🧵> Just came in from garage, 11 pm, told my wife I just made a silk purse out of a sow's ear. World Relief gave me 3 bikes to fix friday when I dropped off two fixed ones. Two were supposedly light repair - flat tires, note that rear brake "needs adjustment." What it needed was replacement because.broken parts. I did that, plus replacing a shifter and 3 brake cables. Delivered those today, tackled the 3d. The sow's ear. 2 flats replace tubes and a rim strip. Replace left shifter. Adjust 🧵>
