Apple showed some incredible technology this morning and it feels really weird to have no desire to own it.
@chockenberry I want to rent one... but I can tell it's something I wouldn't use daily.
@twipped @chockenberry
I rented a PlayStation and DVD player from Blockbuster. So same.
@chockenberry it's definitely a "not at that price" product launch for me. Which is fair enough.

@chockenberry the body is willing but the wallet is not, at least for the Vision Pro.

The 15” MacBook Air seems pretty fairly priced tho.

@chockenberry If I was flying a lot like I used to, insta-buy. Otherwise, I like being around and interacting with people.

@chockenberry When the iPhone first came out, I desperately wanted one-- the only thing that kept me back was the price. It was such an amazing improvement on any of the phones I'd had up to that point-- and I was an early smartphone (Sidekick, Nokia, etc) adopter.

When the Apple Watch first came out, I said, “Huh. I dunno if I want to give my more fashionable watch, but that's nifty" and I ended up getting one several years later.

But this? How does this (currently) slot into my life?

@chockenberry But I realize that I left out the iPad.

When the iPad first came out, I said, "Huh. Not for me.”

But *now*, in 2023, it is my primary mobile computer.

So maybe that's what this will become? In 10 years?

@gregvr
Was there any mention of overcoming VAC? I didn't see anything in the summaries I've read so far. If they don't have a good solution for VAC they don't have a product for me. When I was an intern building VR apps if I was in a headset for too long I got super motion sick and my vision would be wonky for quite a while afterwords. I'm not sensitive to motion generally so I i chalk it up to the eye/brain strain rather than just the conflicting motion information.
@chockenberry

@affekt @chockenberry I'm *somewhat* susceptible to motion sickness-- I could only do the original PSVR1 for about 20 minutes at a time until I needed a break.

The PSVR2, I can go for a full hour.

They *did* make a big point of adding a new chip that is used for all of the “reality" stuff, something something lag something...

If the resolution is high enough and the lag is low enough, I think *most* people could tolerate it, but... no idea.

@gregvr
Yeah I think most people are probably ok, I just know I'm extra sensitive to the hardest thing to fix. Resolution and lag can always be overcome by better processors and displays. Vergence accomodation conflict is a much harder nut to crack and I'm pretty sure that's what ruins it for me.
@chockenberry
@affekt Oh, I was not aware what VAC is! Thanks for letting me know, I'm looking it up now!
@chockenberry just out of curiosity, did you feel the same when they launched Apple Watch and did it change over the years?
@paubhavyang No, I wanted an Apple Watch on day one. Same with iPad. Same with iPhone.

@chockenberry Weird, this has had the opposite effect on me. I'm normally not an Apple fan, no interest in the iPhone, the Watch, etc. But this looks like it might be the first technology that does AR "right" and I'm excited about the idea of trying it... if I can just get over my disappointment at it being inside the iOS walled garden.

That price, though... *ouch*.

@chockenberry That's called getting older.
@chockenberry Only a demo could solve that. Unlike iPhone snd Apple Watch, we have no way of knowing how good the experience is to actually use it. That makes all of the difference. If the experience has truly crossed a threshold, it could be an instant buy for many folks.
@chockenberry This seems different than when the iPhone was introduced. The original price of the iPhone did shock me, but as we got closer to the release date, I knew I wanted it, even at that price.Vision Pro looks awesome, but I don't can't see myself getting comfortable with that price tag (which is just fine w/ me.)
@chockenberry none? I think the remote work stuff is pretty compelling. The price is steep but it’s exciting!
@chockenberry Totally get it. I was more excited with the software updates to phone, messages and iOS 17. Still, really enjoyed #WWDC2023

@chockenberry as a rule I dont want any company, esp not a FAANG, to essentially see everything I myself am seeing. the corp/gov panopticon is creepy and growing out of control. we need to push back and enforce red lines

(I am assuming their headset/goggles can do AR not just VR.)

@synlogic @chockenberry It does AR, but no video leaves the device unless you specifically join a video call and share. Even the, the video does not go to apple. It has a dedicated onboard chip to do all video processing locally. That’s part of why it’s so expensive.
@chockenberry for perspective, this is less than I paid for a dual G5 Mac Pro and it’s half the price of a Pro Display XDR + stand.
@chockenberry
We have become inundated and overwhelmed by technology...
@chockenberry Same. It’s really amazing to see what they’ve done, but I don’t see how it fits into my day-to-day life and I have pretty much every other product they sell.
@chockenberry I played with a Vive for a few months, certainly long enough to decide "VR is not for me". Doesn't matter how light the headset is; I've tried it, I don't like it.

@chockenberry For the cost of two Studio Displays I can have an unlimited number of Studio Displays wherever I'm willing to go with that strapped to my head.

It… actually does kind-of make sense from a consolidation standpoint, and the environment isolation functionality seems quite useful.

People keep comparing this to a VR headset… when that is rather explicitly NOT what it is. (No real comparison to an Occulus or whatnot. More appropriate to compare it to an EyeTap.)

@chockenberry Tim like zuck is trying to sell us hardware without a drool worthy must have software env. Ignoring sjobs skate to where the pick is.
