Dear #Obsidian community, I'd like to figure out how many of us (in a percentage) use sync. I'm a plugin & app dev and I'm asking because I need some numbers to make some decisions regarding a plugin and an app I'm developing. So:

❓ Do you use any form of sync in Obsidian? ❓

Any answers (and boosts, please! 🔄) would be much appreciated — the more, the merrier! Thank you in advance for helping me out here.

I've removed you from the main post, @eleanorkonik @marcusolsson @nicole @kepano — I didn't take into account that any reply would include you as well. Sorry about that!

If you would consider boosting the poll, though, I'd be grateful 🥺🙏🏼

@actionsdotwork Appreciate it. I read everything on pkm.social, but can't always respond right away. Today was a travel day, for example. I've boosted it anyway!

Here's the tally of my #Obsidian sync poll! Out of 405 votes:

- 38%: Obsidian Sync
- 36%: iCloud Sync
- 21%: Another sync solution (by # of mentions):
- #SyncThing
- Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox
- git
- NextCloud
- Remotely Save plugin 😲
- 6% No sync

Thanks to all of you who participated!

@actionsdotwork in addition to iCloud Drive sync, I have a separate vault that uses Google Drive for sync (but I haven't tried to access that on mobile, the sync is basically for backup purposes from a single machine)
@kboyd Thanks! Just don't mix and match, there be dragons 😏
@actionsdotwork nope, won't be trying that until iphones go multiuser/multiprofile ...

I’m very happy with Obsidian Sync’s combination of seamless syncing between all supported platforms, versioning, E2EE, and granular control over what does and doesn’t get synced.

@actionsdotwork @eleanorkonik @marcusolsson @nicole @kepano I use an opensource tool called syncthing to sync my vaults between devices.

@actionsdotwork

I use Syncthing to keep my phone, laptop, and server backup in sync.

@actionsdotwork I use my own nextcloud setup for syncing my obsidian vaults. On android I rely on synchthing for now.
@mattiasw @actionsdotwork also with iOS devices?
@devdog @actionsdotwork no iOS devices. Just windows/linux/android systems.
@actionsdotwork not sure what your plug-in ideas is, but I’ve used the git plugin to try and sync, but would love something that allows me to share a common vault with a team.

@Danwwilson I make a plugin named Actions URI and am at the point where I ponder how to deal with the overall sync situation on iOS and how to avoid data loss due to brittle sync solutions.

More about that on my main acct, see https://norden.social/@czottmann/109841390612292393

Okay, #Obsidian iOS real talk, I'm in a bit of a pickle. When using iCloud Sync, Obs can't tell whether it is syncing, done syncing or subject to syncing at all because iOS is opaque in that regard. When using Obsidian Sync, there's a private API giving me a sync status (synced, syncing, error). Problem: ObsSync isn't prioritized over any plugins so, in theory, that status may be outdated when a plugin checks it. 1/x #ActionsForObsidian #ObsidianMD

@actionsdotwork Using Git via a self-hosted Gitea instance to sync between my Linux laptop and iPhone.
@actionsdotwork hmm. I pressed the wrong bar. I use onedrive and onesync on my android devices. Especially for reading papers on my boox e ink device and taking notes in #obsidian in split screen mode.

@actionsdotwork

@nicole
Use both official Sync and now using #Syncthing on my home server. Official sync was good, but Syncthing is free, and I do love a free app!

#obsidian #actionsforobsidian #ObsidianMD

@actionsdotwork both iCloud and OneDrive.
@actionsdotwork I use Obsidian Sync as live sync between PKM vaults, Tresorit (sync) as Cloud backup storage and GitHub as sync of plugin development vaults. I use Linux, Windows and Android.
@actionsdotwork switched to the remotely save plug-in and works a charm. Synced effortlessly between iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
@trijste That looks nice. It appears to be kind of abandoned, tho…? (Just visited its GitHub page.)
@actionsdotwork working perfectly for me now. I’m using Dropbox for the remote part. Not sure how active development is. It’s rare I’m “working“ on my vault on my phone or tablet, but the concept of having them synced is comforting. Remotely save was a miracle upon discovery.

@actionsdotwork

Google Drive because:

- 100G is reasonably priced

- My vaults contains many different file types - not just .md files

- I access my vault using multiple apps.
https://ia.net/writer
https://simplemind.eu/
https://pandoc.org/
https://blot.im/
Windows, Android and ChromeOS file managers

- The performance of #obsisianmd on Android with 14k+ notes sucks so Sync would be of little benefit

@actionsdotwork Obsidian Sync for my primary vault, but I just started an experiment with the Obsidian Git plugin in another vault.
@actionsdotwork I sync with Dropbox. I only ever use desktop apps, so it works.
@actionsdotwork I use Git to sync across my devices
@actionsdotwork
I use syncthing. Don't need something else.
@actionsdotwork I use SyncThing. Works quite well except when you start using machine-specific directories like pointing to an exported Zotero library.
@actionsdotwork I store my vaults in Dropbox, but considering Obsidian sync so I can access them on a mobile device.
@actionsdotwork I have my vault backed up to a GitHub repo. On my MacBook I use the Obsidian Git plugin to do automatic backups, and on my iPhone and iPad I use Working Copy and Shortcuts
@actionsdotwork Hello! I sync my vault with my own Nextcloud server.
Texhnically it's not the entire vault, only certain folders - my setup is a bit convoluted with symbolic links and all that 😛
@actionsdotwork I use nexcloud to sync on my own server :)
@actionsdotwork I'm only using obsidian on my pc, and I have my vaults in OneDrive to have them accessible on my devices
@actionsdotwork i would love to use Onedrive and/or nextcloud.
@actionsdotwork I'm using self-hosted Nextcloud (via YunoHost). It works well for my PC, laptop and Android phone.
@actionsdotwork I use Obsidian Git and my own Gitea instance to sync, back up, and version control my vault. :) With Working Copy on iOS push and pull the latest notes.
@actionsdotwork @randomgeek Am using Obsidian Sync but would prefer(-ish) to be using iCloud, which is sadly prone to locking up and refusing to sync on my Mac. (Happily, native app sync has benefits of its own like explicit version history and paying the dev team!)
@actionsdotwork Sync + git for backups if that counts
@actionsdotwork due to work requirements, I have to operate across windows/iOS devices. iCloud worked fine for a while, then the dreaded and widely report duplicate file problem started, and nothing would resolve it. While I loved “free”, I opted to go Obsidian Sync and all problems resolved across platforms.
@actionsdotwork I sync all my vaults to Google drive via #rclone
https://rclone.org/
Rclone

Rclone syncs your files to cloud storage: Google Drive, S3, Swift, Dropbox, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Box and many more.

@actionsdotwork
I use two: Obsidian Sync to sync to my mobile phone (Android) and I use git to sync to my ChromeBook
