hey everyone,

you may have guessed reading between the lines, but I lost my job in the recent tech layoffs…

also burnt out and realised I need to go back to working on stuff I care about.

I hope to gather enough small monthly sponsors to at least cover the bills, so I can:

- πŸ–₯️ create beautiful apps for #Linux / #GNOME

- ✏️ provide free #design support to #OpenSource projects

if you like my work, please consider $1/month to make this possible?

thank you. :)

Hello! I'm Hylke. I'm a product designer who codes. I design and build software. Both how it looks, and how it works.

I love working with people from all over the world.

It looks like we'll meet at #PyConItalia again this year.
As always, it's a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones, with our favorite snake as an excuse.
This year I will explore #FastHTML, a microframework in #Python that combines the immediacy of FastAPI with the expressiveness of HTMX, allowing even die-hard Pythonistas who are not very familiar with frontend to create full-stack web applications. See you in Bologna in May? #PyConIT #PyConIT26

In the early days of personal computing CPU bugs were so rare as to be newsworthy. The infamous Pentium FDIV bug is remembered by many, and even earlier CPUs had their own issues (the 6502 comes to mind). Nowadays they've become so common that I encounter them routinely while triaging crash reports sent from Firefox users. Given the nature of CPUs you might wonder how these bugs arise, how they manifest and what can and can't be done about them. 🧡 1/31
I think the cult of the former #python BDFL has gone too far.

It's somewhat amusing that you can pass yourself off as a Russia expert commenting on this "peace deal" as messy but at least "a way to end the war" without realising Kremlin sees it as just a tactic to continue it later.

It will end nothing.

I wish more software engineering leaders remembered that typing out the code was never the hard part.

Typing out the right code. That was the hard part.

AI doesn't help with that. AI tools will happily:
- generate 5k line functions
- install 100 packages to handle something built into a language
- optimize for non-bottlenecks
- write 10x tests for the same 5 functions and leave most untested

AI is cool, but you still need brain on, so your AI buddy doesn't walk you into a dead end.

It's been a month since I've been without $job, but that doesn't mean I was lazy πŸ˜… I used this time to prepare a lot of changes to Django πŸ’š including some old feature requests like database-level delete options and decimal fields with no precision, as well as fixing 15+ years old bugs πŸ› I'm still on the market! Kind of frustrating that serval gaming outlets are calling the Oct 28 release of Death by Scrolling a "Windows PC" release while totally ignoring (forgetting) it also includes the native Mac and Linux. We worked hard to fully support all three platforms.
