I've seen two patients since lunch.

Neither can remember what we are talking about 5 minutes later, have Tachycardia sitting there that fatigues them, and they seem confused throughout.

This is the 3rd time getting COVID for both. Both got it over holiday break.

Both are PROFESSIONALS.

Avoid.

Covid.

At the time I said ^^^, it was just after noon. I went on to see 7 more patients, 3 of which had charted issues w/:

Fatigue
Memory
Cognition
Aberrant heart rate

This isn't selection/sampling bias. I'm a general adult psychiatrist.

If you need more persuasion covid is a multi-systemic bastard, can check out my pinned Presentation on Long Covid.

Iterative infections are creating lasting "ghosting" of people.

Shadows of their former selves.

@hannu_ikonen

Have you seen any field data on renal (CKD specifically) impact or perhaps cardiomegaly post-infection?

@hannu_ikonen

#LongCovid almost seems to have some similarities to CWD.

@hannu_ikonen this sounds like my life since May of last year. Covid is no joke and I’ve only had it once (that I’m aware of).
@hannu_ikonen at least long covid is getting some attention so perhaps treatments will be forthcoming. That wasn't the case with "yuppie flu" that hit in the mid-eighties, followed by a large influx of CFS and fibromyalgia, "equally" debilitating but largely ignored by the medical and research communities. My wife has been going thru that since January, 1986. 😢
Long COVID Treatment Not ‘One-Size-Fits-All’

A study has found what many patients and doctors are already discovering: There is no single treatment for long COVID, and many different patients are having many different symptoms.

WebMD
@hannu_ikonen I've had it twice. Vaxxed.
As if ADHD isn't bad enough, now I need to recalibrate for covid fog 😥
I really don't recommend it :-(
@deborahh @hannu_ikonen As someone with ADHD, I’ve often wondered if Ritalin would help Long Covid brain fog.
@hannu_ikonen What gets me is how otherwise *smart* people with good internet access and left-of-centre politics - as you said, triple-vaxxed or better - are just so la-dee-dah about this 💩 ... of course, it doesn't help that US CDC thinks "mask" is some kind of forbidden Saxon epithet and refuses to use it anymore... 😱 🤬 🤯
@stonebear @hannu_ikonen This. Like, our school community was SO GOOD about doing the right things for so long, but now they just blink at you like an owl if you mention covid or masks.
@hannu_ikonen I wish I could boost this twice. 👍
@donmelton @hannu_ikonen Don, let me buy you lunch one day. You’re probably one of the coolest people I haven’t met and I like your mind and your perspective on things
@micro_meredith @hannu_ikonen What a sweet offer! ❤️ Thanks and I may just take you up on that. 👍 🙂
@hannu_ikonen Dr. Ikonen, do you find evidence to suggest that systemic inflammatory reactions are perhaps linked to cognitive changes for people infected (and reinfected) with Covid? As a nurse, this was sort of a supposition I had working frontline, but I don’t have anything to back it up that isn’t anecdotal or experiential
@hannu_ikonen Dr., what do you recommend for tachycardia?
@hannu_ikonen - Yep. My parents have it for the first time and mom's brain is glitching like that kid in Wreck it Ralph. A colleague at work is on their second round of COVID and clearly not operating at full capacity. I would compare COVID to being t-boned by a car while on a motorcycle. The helmet is a nice thing, but brains don't always bounce back quite right.
@hannu_ikonen 9 months in. Started with fatigue. Progressed to tachycardia and fatigue. Now chest pains and palpitations and hives.
Mild acute infection round one. No plans to get round 2.
Yes, completely vaxxed.

@hannu_ikonen I'm still trying.

#DougFord doesn't care. So the rules on #publictransit in #Ontario are still non-existent.

@hannu_ikonen sounds very much like POTS (or ME/CFS) … all forms of dysautonomia that may not be ‘curable’, but have mitigating measures that can be taken. I learned hard way with teenager who went from year round sports to couldn’t go to school for almost a year.

@hannu_ikonen

thanks for posting this. I have shared it to my FB page. carry on

@hannu_ikonen @hannu_ikonen Thank you, Hannu, for your #covid #activism 🙏🏼 I seem to be the last person still wearing masks in #florida , #usa 😷

But, I’m also probably the only one in my circle who hasn’t caught #covid19 (thank God).

I hope you might appreciate my short #meditation on our global #pandemic , published by #oxford #University :

@hannu_ikonen Covid discovery and progress happened when leaders are weak.. It was great timing. Now, it's endemic to all. With its ability to mutate, it's kinda perfect, but bad for humans.
@hannu_ikonen I’ve been lucky to not have gotten COVID: symptomless with neg. tests over 75x, (both rapid and PCR) even when exposed unmasked to others who tested next day as positive. Most of those I’ve known with 1st and 2nd cases of COVID were, like me, vaxxed & boosted. I don’t really mask anymore, BUT try to be smart and still keep a distance in public. I’m usually the only one on the plane in a mask. Too many people seem to not believe in long COVID or take it seriously!
@hannu_ikonen
Thank you for posting this, I've had COVID twice and am having memory issues.
My recall is so bad I've had to resort to taking photos and/or writing what I need to remember on a blackboard!
I've even forgotten the order of my ATM numbers. I knew the numbers but not the sequence, if that isn't odd enough.🤷

@MaryAliciaZiff @hannu_ikonen

That sucks that you're having memory issues, but I am glad you've started a system for it. I live with other chronic illness and it took me a while to respond to the fact that my meds give me brain fog/forgetfulness esp when I'm already tired

@MaryAliciaZiff @hannu_ikonen

Berberine
Astaxanthin
Potassium humate
Resveratrol

These cross the blood brain barrier and work counter to the virus. Not as good as I'd like, but better than nothing.

@hannu_ikonen "PROFESSIONALS" you say? so, they have a job? they have an... important job? is that to say the unemployed are more likely to get tired from tach and are more likely to just have brain fog naturally? are NEETS just more likely to act like they have long covid? are you suggesting the symptoms of those w/out high-powered careers are just... not worth noting? smells like a real nasty bias you got there. thank you, at least, for saying it out loud.
@hannu_ikonen
COVID mutations on the rise in India so we know it's headed our way. Much more contagious apparently. Will anybody care?
