Today, for the first time in American history, a major political party will have no white men in its top leadership positions in the House.

Leader: Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8)
Whip: Katherine Clark (MA-5)
Chair: Pete Aguilar (CA-33)

@charlotteclymer I am so hopeful that this showcases some small improvements in the underpinnings of our society and the way things run.

Representation matters so much. I'm hopeful that this is a step in the right direction.

@mentallyalex @charlotteclymer As an Arab-American immigrant(born in Egypt) I feel better represented in these Divided States of America.✌🏽

What these humble one-liners can teach us about the times we live in

Yahia Lababidi said the 140 character age of Twitter has turned many of us into aspiring aphorists. And he believes the form is more important than ever.

@charlotteclymer

I think America can take off the training wheels now.

Pretty sure we're capable of running this country without white men in charge of everything and bringing us to the brink of bankruptcy, civil war, and nuclear war.

@charlotteclymer at the rate the GOP is going they might not have any leadership *at all*
@killfile @charlotteclymer To be fair have they ever?

@cupcakezealot @charlotteclymer -- it's not entirely fair but...

"The last time a Republican had morals, principles, and competence everyone was so impressed that we named the entire interstate highway system after him."

@cupcakezealot @killfile @charlotteclymer they did abolish slavery. It's a shame that the modern Republicans seem determined to undo that.
@killfile @charlotteclymer
I wonder if the three above even know how much their own parties voting base detest them in leadership roles.
@charlotteclymer I'm from massachusetts and I'm super happy for Katherine Clark! She's amazing! She'll be a great successor to Speaker Pelosi some day!
@charlotteclymer This should be a typical instance going forward, just as it’s been the norm for forever for White men to control the key levers of power in Congress.
@charlotteclymer And the guy in the middle makes everything worse.
@charlotteclymer This doesn't stray too far, but I guess an improvement is an improvement.

@charlotteclymer

A person's values and political beliefs are more important than skin color/gender, imo.

If new leadership is unwilling to change the current status quo, which has failed the citizens completely, that's not an improvement.

Talking the talk is worthless if they aren't willing to walk the walk.
All 3 of these are proponents of BAU and the neoliberal policies that cause us citizens so much harm.

Our nightmare continues. πŸ™„

@504DR @charlotteclymer Well said. Comments as to the nation's troubles being the fault of a particular race and sex (regardless of that race and sex) is bigotry, plain and simple.

@only1miller @charlotteclymer

MLK's speech about content of character rather than color of skin (with gender added as an update by me) is lost on so many social justice warriors, imo.

Thatcher taught us some women can be awful as some men, scotus Thomas teaches us that some blacks can be as awful as white supremacists, Biden teaches us that some Dems are as awful as GOP.

Bc of this misconception, here we are in 2023 fighting the same battles over/over again, losing ground each time.

All the while, the drum beat of Progressives are the true enemy and must be thwarted at every turn rules the day.

@504DR @charlotteclymer
Article doesn't mention if it's the first time even one is a non-millionaire.

@RoyBrander @charlotteclymer

That would go against the narrative that we are suppose to just accept that it is normal for our reps to be rich ppl.

Can't have that!

@charlotteclymer I share your amazement and hopes for a change in our nations government branches direction for equality and commitment to justice and fairness for WE THE PEOPLE rather than a subgroup. Unfortunately, today the spectacle in the House of Representatives, spearheaded by the fascist far right trying to even be able to choose the Speaker, will be an embarrassment to the nation and citizens of this nation who spoke clearly in the last elections for a new direction.
@charlotteclymer
And that party would be.... the Democrats. of course.
@charlotteclymer
We should celebrate diversity, not the absence of people like me.

@charlotteclymer

But do they have a sense of humor?

What if five or ten old-fashioned REAL Republicans got together and nominated Liz Cheney as Speaker of the House? Would they go along with that joke?

Much as I disagree with her (and despise her father), I think it would be hilarious and couldn't make the House any more dysfunctional than it usually is when the GOP is in charge.

@charlotteclymer I almost asked which party. Then I LOLed at myself.
@charlotteclymer I tweeted the request to locate a chart of congressional breakdown by party and race, and was called a racist. I was looking for factual data for such a thing exist?
@charlotteclymer I suppose this could change if Jefferies is voted Speaker. Would be odd, but maybe they could have both Speaker and Minority Leader, different people? I don't know, these are uncharted waters.
@charlotteclymer Speaking as a white male, a condition over which I exerted no control, I am utterly DELIGHTED to see Jeffries, Clark and Aguilar as Leader, Whip and Chair. Its marvelous and for me a view into a much better future.

@charlotteclymer
still they managed to find a new conservative leader in Jeffries. I hope he proves me wrong.

House seats are on the line as progressives challenge incumbents in a string of contested Democratic primaries, part of a broader struggle over the party’s future

@charlotteclymer hallelujah! I love this!! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌ
@charlotteclymer Will democrats stand firm against Republican Terrorist Organization?

@charlotteclymer

While there is no denying this is a remarkable state of affairs, it is shameful that we have not yet arrived in a place in our development where it is no longer so noteworthy.

@charlotteclymer As I understand it, there are no white men in House leadership positions in either party.
@charlotteclymer I’m bettin’ that’s really freaking some people out right now!
@charlotteclymer Turns out at the end of today neither party has white men in leadership positions in the House.
@charlotteclymer
And THIS is how you KNOW it's the Democratic Party!
This would NEVER happen within the GOP.
@charlotteclymer
I'm down with that!! The white men in parts of our government aren't doing particularly well at the moment!!
@charlotteclymer the white men have retreated to their illuminati seats
