Washington Post will be creating their own instance. They will add #mastodon accounts to journalist profiles.

Institutional #journalism embracing the #fediverse is important.

UPDATE 07.54 AM: WaPo is *discussing* instance, first messaging about this was too definitive. Seeing level of support, hoping they decide in favour [END]

#commodon #journodon @communicationscholars

@claesdevreese I hope that if a journalist leaves the Washington Post, they can take their followers and such with them.
@joelle @claesdevreese Shouldn’t be any different than migrating to any other server… unless the Post decide to be dicks and ban the account so they can’t get back in to make the transfer. But that’s a potential problem with all instances.

@Ateriath @claesdevreese For sure -- who owns your instance matters. Having an instance your ability to earn income depends upon that may be in conflict with your future income seems like it's particularly likely to cause problems.

I'm glad to see WP supporting the fediverse. But I am concerned I'm not going to be able to follow good reporters to their next publication.

@joelle @Ateriath @claesdevreese
Journalists move around with some frequency. It would be self defeating to do anything that would interfere with their ability to attract people from other organizations.
Preventing former employees from moving their accounts would certainly fall into this category.
@joeinwynnewood @joelle @claesdevreese This is true. It is also true that some people are short sighted and act against their own self interest in order to hurt those by whom they feel wronged. Many of these people are bosses.
@claesdevreese @Ateriath @joelle there could some tech tools built for journalists (and really anyone on someone else’s host) to ensure migration, identity, or maybe even automatic official to personal acct mirror posts.
@joelle @claesdevreese Depending on any contract terms, one assumes. technically, yes.
@claesdevreese This approach does so much more for credibility than blue checkmarks ever have, even before you could just buy them.
And I think it's something people already implicitly understand, because we know how website domains and email addresses for official stances from an organization are supposed to work.
@claesdevreese that would be great! Do you have a link or document describing their move?
@claesdevreese I did come across this post, which seems to suggest this indeed https://journa.host/@jeremybowers/109551706041274437

Mastodon
@vtraag @jeremybowers will be the one with details
@claesdevreese @vtraag Jury still out on if we host an instance, but we're actively working on adding links to profiles for our journalists! Trust is important!
@jeremybowers @claesdevreese great, thanks! Having WP host their own server would be a game changer. We started our own institutional server a few weeks ago. Our move is just throwing a pebble in a pond. WP doing so would throw in a rock.
@jeremybowers @claesdevreese @vtraag and this is why citing sources is important
@claesdevreese @jeremybowers @vtraag thanks a lot. Interesting question for a media (I’ m working for the french public radio), instance or not?
@latrive
I would say that for most larger organisations an instance makes sense in terms of both facilitating 'official' accounts s, for boosting posts from individual reporters on personal accounts and as a news monitoring mechanism..
@claesdevreese @jeremybowers @vtraag

I dont think that the out of the box #Mastodon or #activitypub solutions really exist for #corporates, #media or #publishers yet though. Id be looking for features like integration to editorial systems, stats and instance crawling features, perhaps subscription capabilities among other things.
@latrive

@claesdevreese @jeremybowers @vtraag

@latrive
what are your thoughts [email protected]?
Are existing #Twitter feeds generally plugged into editorial systems or fed via social media tools like #hootsuite ?
@claesdevreese @vtraag
@jeremybowers @claesdevreese @vtraag If you do decide to, it'll be a historical move as the first publication to do so (I imagine a lot more will follow).
@jeremybowers @claesdevreese @vtraag -
PLEASE have the Washington Post host your own instance! In addition to all the issues of security and control, also consider that it is an unreasonable burden for an organization the size and stature of WaPo to depend upon volunteer labor and donated hardware for your Fediverse connection.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars assuming it’s true, one for @jimcarroll

@beyondwatts @claesdevreese @communicationscholars

Ya, I saw a toot about this earlier; if true, my poll from last week is wildly out of date!

This thing has momentum!

@claesdevreese @communicationscholars This seems like a great opportunity for all journalists: an instance that enforces journalistic standards that then can create a greater sense of trust among followers.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars I was counting on this to happen eventually! Best way to have a verified account is to have it on a restricted instance.

@claesdevreese @communicationscholars @jeremybowers

As a subscriber, I would be thrilled to see this. The recent Editorial Board article about how the bird site could be fixed is not the priority. Setting up WAPOs own instance shows incredible leadership and a level of trust that content is not being censored by that other site.

@claesdevreese @communicationscholars

I think this is absolutely great. They get to provide the moderation at the level they want. And they don’t have to worry about some idiot shutting them down.

**BUT**
I highly recommend that all Washington Post reporters also keep a personal account elsewhere. They can use that to boost everything they post on the official account. But they can also use it for personal posts. And if they lose their job, they still have an account, and the links to everything they wrote.

People can decide whether they want to follow just the news, or the whole person.

I also hope that the Post uses lists andor hashtags so that it’s easy to follow topics and specific subjects. I think in general lists will be better, because they can control what shows up when you view it. Hashtags will undoubtably get spammed.

#mastodon #press

@claesdevreese @communicationscholars it's important indeed. It will help other media and news agencies to do the same. Then Governments and Public Institutions will move here.
And then, we're done with Twitter.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars it would be really great!
Is there any official communication about that?
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars @chancerydaily having your mastodon account tied to your employer does NOT sound great
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars I hope they make it easy for journalists to own/transfer their work and accountv if they ever leave the WaPo too
@claesdevreese For $4.99/month per user, right?
@communicationscholars @claesdevreese Perhaps of interest for you (and certainly related): together with other unions, the Danish Union of Journalists is currently looking into creating a #Mastodon instance. In contrast to the WaPo model, as I imagine it, this means journalists will be able to stay on instance even if they get a new job. #dkmedier https://journalisten.dk/ego-og-kulturkrigsprojekt-udelukkelse-af-journalister-faar-mediefolk-op-af-stolene/

@askekammer @communicationscholars @claesdevreese The Swedish Journalists Union through @ulrikamhedman is saying the same thing about getting Swedish journalists on the Fediverse.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars this is awesome. Feels like a true tipping point.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars This is an amazing moment, when there is the opportunity for institutional media to choose an ad-free, non-surveillance platform. #Mastodon #WashingtonPost #fediverse
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars Good move.
This is the way to go. All press should do that. Accounts certified by the use of their domain name.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars Any business or govt agency that has their own email domain and servers should have their own fediverse instance(s). Would you trust an email from [email protected]?

@claesdevreese @communicationscholars

The Fediverse runs on ActivityPub, the world’s leading federated social web standard .
My hope is that they will unleash the possibilities of this Open Protocol which can be baked in their pages and extended with all the journalist vocabularies from IPTC to EBU.
It has multilanguage properties and we talked about this often in the dev meetings.

My hope is that Online Journalism incubates, also software suited for their needs.

The underlying world's leading federated #webstandard #ActivityPub is capable of powering journalist software too and I am building a full featured CMS Open Source for you all. Also co-did the official Confs https://redaktor.me – well, and some stories. The other take is that your audience might now judge your news org. credibility if they leave Elmo and come by here or at any of the 40 softwares. https://digitalcourage.social/@[email protected]/109521116941050708 We are happy to help! I'm thrilled that it's even being talked about; that's a step in the right direction.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars
Not too surpringly for me the WP seems to be the first major one. Now: what will be the first German one?
Spiegel, Zeit... anyone?
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars I don’t know if I’m being too naive, but think about that: news sites hosting their own instances, which play the role of the comments section, or something like that? With a little tweaking here and there, along with RSS integration, anyone could see the comments, without the need to register on the instance. That would be necessary only if the person wanted to comment

@claesdevreese @communicationscholars

Interesting idea.
The institutional support is positive but I’m skeptical about having people belong to a specific organisation’s server.

Maybe servers would be better thought of as guilds/societies with members of many different organisations belonging, with the org sponsoring relevant servers to which their members belong?

@claesdevreese @communicationscholars This is huge. Hope it's the break that clears the logjam.
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars if they don’t call it washingon.postadon they can gtfo
@claesdevreese @communicationscholars I feel like this us what organizations or businesses in the fedi should look like. Imagine indy record labels having an instance their artists are on!
