🤨 EA is launching an in-game ad service, the idea publishers have toyed with for years is finally leaving the whiteboard.
Everyone else flirted with billboards, sponsor plugs and mild integrations, but nobody wanted to actually put their hand on the stove. EA goes first, expect ramped-up monetization, targeted promos inside games and a healthy dose of player backlash. BRUH

«University College London math professor Alan Sokal tested the power of language in a similar way. He submitted a nonsensical paper to an academic journal that proposed that quantum gravity was a social and linguistic construct. Since words like “quantum gravity” have an air of importance, they are often accepted without question. Sokal’s paper was accepted for publication because, in his words, “It was liberally salted with nonsense that a) sounded good and b) flattered the editors’ ideological preconceptions.”
Then there are what have come to be known as the “grievance studies” conducted by philosopher Peter Boghossian, mathematician James Lindsay, and author and British cultural critic Helen Pluckrose. They wrote and submitted for academic publication twenty articles about things that on their face would seem outrageous: dogs engaging in rape culture; rewriting Hitler’s Mein Kampf in feminist language, and so on. Their aim was to show that a lack of academic rigor had developed in journal publishing and that even absurd topics could see the light of day when they come from people with good credentials. Astonishingly, only six of their articles were rejected. Four were published, three more were accepted and prepared for publication, and seven were still under review when the hoax was revealed. When it comes to pills and words, we have strong expectations. As Paul Simon sang, “A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.”»
