Mediaite's confusion?
Didn't he make up a bunch, like the character #JohnMastodon naming Mastodon after himself?
@mmasnick
[man in trenchcoat approaches, sits at table, fiddles with something in his shirt]
“Hey. I’m a friend of John. John Mastodon. I hear, uh, this is where John hangs out. Do you know where he is?”
@mmasnick Look. We can't even figure out who Satoshi is, and we're starting on a new one.
Let's finish that job first before we move on to #Johnmastodon OK?
I approve.

@mmasnick Story has it that in the 60s, gay men identified each other as “friends of Dorothy,” referring to Judy Garland’s iconic performance in “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Are you, by any chance, a friend of John?”
@mmasnick This exact thing happened on TikTok!
Cosplayers who also had OnlyFans accounts started referring to themselves "accountants" to avoid being insta-banned by TikTok for being on OF.
The reference is from a song by actor Rocky Patera, who got tired of explaining he went to auditions all the time, so he tells people he's an accountant.
@mmasnick We can also use links services like beacons.ai, then link to it in social media bios, which hides the links.
Check my bio here for an example.
I was contemplating a content warning for the "friends of Dorothy" reference in case it triggered... oh, right, folks who would be offended by that are mostly raging on Twitter or would be happy to have something new to rail against. 😜
Very much like "friends of Bill W," members of Mastodon Anon. can be "friends of John." I can dig it.
