Since "John Mastodon" has gone so viral here following Mediaite's confusion, I think, in the future, for those folks left on Twitter who want to secretly refer to Mastodon after Elon bans all mentions of it, just talk about "friends of John" as the code...

@mmasnick

Mediaite's confusion?

Didn't he make up a bunch, like the character #JohnMastodon naming Mastodon after himself?

@mmasnick
[man in trenchcoat approaches, sits at table, fiddles with something in his shirt]

“Hey. I’m a friend of John. John Mastodon. I hear, uh, this is where John hangs out. Do you know where he is?”

@mmasnick Look. We can't even figure out who Satoshi is, and we're starting on a new one.

Let's finish that job first before we move on to #Johnmastodon OK?

@mmasnick The users of EMitter could learn from Chinese people how to fly under the censorship radar.
@mmasnick There’s more and more news coverage about Mastodon. If people still on Twitter don’t know about Mastodon and have some curiosity then…
@mmasnick Or, a future Wikipedia article: "Let's Go to John's" is a left-wing and overall good-natured political slogan and Internet meme used as a substitute for the phrase "F**k Elon Musk"
@mmasnick do we get to chant “let’s go, John “
@mmasnick this feels like the narwhale baconing at midnight
@mmasnick We are like six months from someone having to answer a question regarding whether they were or were not a part of the “friends of John” movement in front of a congressional committee headed by MTG and Elon Musk’s ninth favorite son.
@andrew @mmasnick
I refuse to confirm or deny I have every been a friend of John
@mmasnick was that a friend of Dorthy riff? Well done.
@mmasnick Or how to drive EM even more crazy. Love it! #FriendsOfJohn
@mmasnick friends of John...jingleheimerschmit??????
@mmasnick sir I would like to subscribe to your news bulletin.

@mmasnick ironic that #JohnMastodon feels like a pivotal moment in Mastodon coming into its own.
@mmasnick "I like your shoelaces"
@mmasnick If we make it “friends of John M”, that will give it a nice AA vibe.

@mmasnick Story has it that in the 60s, gay men identified each other as “friends of Dorothy,” referring to Judy Garland’s iconic performance in “The Wizard of Oz.”

“Are you, by any chance, a friend of John?”

@johndumas I'm aware of the history. Also, AA people use "friend of Bob." I was referencing both in my post.
@mmasnick Twitter bans are dear John letters…
@mmasnick finally!!! I have been wondering why people on the sh*t site aren't using code words to communicate about this site. I tried to suggest something, but then I realised I only have 28 followers. No one will see my suggestion. So, I gave up.

@mmasnick This exact thing happened on TikTok!

Cosplayers who also had OnlyFans accounts started referring to themselves "accountants" to avoid being insta-banned by TikTok for being on OF.

The reference is from a song by actor Rocky Patera, who got tired of explaining he went to auditions all the time, so he tells people he's an accountant.

I'm an Accountant

@mmasnick it’s our very own “Let’s Go John” secret catchphrase.

@mmasnick We can also use links services like beacons.ai, then link to it in social media bios, which hides the links.

Check my bio here for an example.

@mmasnick Friends of John tend to be inclusive, and welcome friends of Dorothy as well 🤗🏳️‍🌈
@mmasnick can you still say "mastodon" over there? I wonder how Paleontology Twitter is holding up
@mmasnick gives me friend of dorothy vibes 😥 closeted mastodon user :3

@Jungekatz @mmasnick

I was contemplating a content warning for the "friends of Dorothy" reference in case it triggered... oh, right, folks who would be offended by that are mostly raging on Twitter or would be happy to have something new to rail against. 😜

@mmasnick Superb Twoop or whatever they call it over here.
@mmasnick I’ve been referring to it as the “ancient elephant” site but I’m happy to switch.

@mmasnick

Very much like "friends of Bill W," members of Mastodon Anon. can be "friends of John." I can dig it.

@mmasnick Special "I'm a Friend of John" hats? I'd wear one!
