Related to recent discussions about trans intolerance but widely applicable elsewhere, I am once again evangelizing Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance.

"We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant"

Finished Salman Rushdie's latest #Book and it was an absolute delight. The setting of ~1300-1500s southern India is fascinating, and the "found manuscript" style works wonderfully. A 9-year old girl is given divine power by a godess after witnessing the ritual burning of widows including her mother. She spends the next 250 years trying to create and maintain a more equitable kingdom, succeeding and failing. Torn on whether to read more Rushdie or Indian history next.

To my knowledge, there is no consensus in the LGBTQIA+ community that public libraries cannot give one more cent to Pottermore Publishing, ever, and that if they do, librarians are transphobes. If there is such a consensus, which I doubt, I submit that being a librarian and managing a library collection for the entire general public (while being under pressure from that same general public from all sides) is far more difficult, and less morally unambiguous, than that community imagines it to be.
Obscure historical knowledge ask: im looking for a guide on how to make prehistoric pottery. Late copper age / early bronze age corded ware or bell beaker type? I'm taking a pottery class, hoping to learn what the experience of making these was like. #Archaeology #ArtHistory #History #Pottery
A follow-on to my earlier #ebook question: I got great answers for modern authors on avoiding Amazon, but the problem I ran into was for older #Books. I was reading an English translation of Revolt of the Masses by Jose Ortega y Gasset on archive.org and struggled with reading page facsimiles on my phone. I need something more like ePub or mobi for these classic but still in copyright books. Thoughts? #Bookstodon

Where should I be buying #eBooks from? I've divested myself from Amazon, and Kobo run by another megacorp. Where can I purchase through if I want max $ for the author?

Three Oregon universities decided not to renew their Elsevier subscriptions at the end of 2022.

"Students & faculty may experience delays in having access to requested Elsevier articles, said [U of Oregon University Librarian & Vice Provost Alicia Salaz]. 'In the long term however, we are confident that students…& scholars everywhere will benefit from a system that doesn't exploit academic labor for excessive profit,' she said."

Pressing ‘pause’ on Elsevier subscription

UO pauses its Elsevier subscription journal package and stands up for open access research alongside other universities.

I am looking for someone to take over the https://alt-text.org project. There's a working prototype and lots of low hanging fruit to start with, and I'll be available for any help you need.

One larger task is to rewrite the backend in Rust. It's primarily CPU bound and Node is not ideal. I've just released an implementation of the image matching algorithm used in Rust, which was always the biggest hurdle: https://github.com/alt-text-org/image-match-rs

If you'd like to hear more, please DM.

Boosts welcome

Alt-Text.Org

A library of alt text written by humans, in progress. Stay tuned for a roadmap.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, with one caveat. It's going to be a hard read at some points, specifically the descriptions of lynchings, mob violence and the brutal murder of black children. I cried for those left adrift in a sea of nearly unimaginable human cruelty, and experienced a rollercoaster of emotions. For me personally, it feels cowardly to shy away from these lived human experiences. If they can live it, the least I can do is read it.

He spends most of his life as a railroad porter, in stark contrast to Robert Foster who manages to make (and lose) a fortune as a doctor in LA. Foster's parents were teachers, and his access to education made a world of difference.

I'm humbled by Ida Mae Gladney's perseverance in a time and place that saw black women as little more than domestic labor. She had this amazing sense of self-worth that the world seemed unable to deflate, despite it's best efforts.
