Sandy Hook happened 10 years ago today. At the time, people said "how many more children have to die before we do something to stop the killing?"

The answer: 25,000

25,000 children killed by guns in America in the last decade.

And still virtually nothing has been done.

@tristansnell And Republicans are doing everything they can to perpetuate the slaughter of American children in service of Gun Industry profits and those fat envelopes delivered by the NRA.
#GunControl
@bigheadtales @tristansnell
Don’t forget, it keeps Americans in a perpetual state of fear and continues to erode trust in public education.

@tristansnell

That's so insane. I don't have the exact numbers for my country but I would think it is like 15 children killed by guns in 10 years.
And my country is around 60 times smaller than the US, meaning it is around 900 in US numbers. Insane difference.

@Tazor @tristansnell

its roughly equivalent to the entire student population of 50 American schools which apparently have average student numbers of 500 (eg going into the classroom and finding all the desks empty) - this is a lot of kids..

@vfrmedia @tristansnell

25.000 kids who didn't get to have their first dance, their first love, their first kiss.
25.000 families devastated.
25.000 futures erased like a Thanos snap.

Devastating no matter how you look at such a number.

@Tazor @tristansnell the difference is half your country doesn’t believe they have a divine right to a weapon because of an amendment to their constitution that was put in place to create a militia in a time before standing armies.

@tristansnell

you mean more than 25k, since we have not done anything yet.

@tristansnell
Gun control ideologues
1. Avoid difficult discussions on how to fix culture and seek an easy answer
2.Would rather blame everyone with a gun than admit there's a right-wing terrorist movement in the US
3. Fetishize certain aesthetics of firearms as 'AR Bad' without an understanding of what they're talking about.
4. Have no understanding how important having an armed population is to a country that may have to resist a full blown fascist takeover in a few years.
@SocialistStan Gun control is not merely an ideology, it's practiced effectively by most countries in the world, my own included. To us, it's mystifying that America won't do anything to stop the thousands of gun deaths. You haven't explained that.
@anne_twain What do you think should be done?
@SocialistStan I'm not an American and I don't pretend to know enough about American society to be able to suggest anything.
@anne_twain Texas just tried to create a database of trans people for some reason which the AG's office will not say. Should trans people disarm?
@anne_twain Millions and millions of Americans, on both the left and right, myself included, are willing to fight for our right to bear arms. How exactly do you propose the government take our weapons without using ...guns!
@SocialistStan Why are you asking me? Im not an American. I haven't proposed anything. If you go on being a pest I'll have to block you.
@anne_twain Because I've blocked three gun control nuts from Australia since getting on this platform and I'm sick of them.
@SocialistStan Okay, here's a deal. I'll block you and you block me. We need never bother each other again.
@SocialistStan hey Stan. I'm an Australian with 40 years service in the army. Tanks mostly. I've shot bigger guns than your pathetic arse ever will experience but please block me because you're dickhead attitude gets kids killed and no civilian ever needs a gun. PS I have never allowed one in my house because I love my kids too much @anne_twain

@tristansnell I used to be extremely moderate on gun control. I mean, I grew up in gun country, and many lovely people I know hunt, etc.

Sandy Hook was when I knew that Americans love their guns more than they care about other people's kids. From then on, I was Done.

I do want to take your guns away, actually. I want to take everyone's guns away, melt them down, and turn them into farming implements.

@tristansnell It’s time to Ban Assault Weapons!
@tristansnell Guns are now the leading cause of death for children. At a bare minimum, people could look into the #BeSmart program from #MomsDemandAction and keep their firearms LOCKED UP. #Enough #NotOneMore #DontLookAway
@tristansnell @shan73198 Heard this along with the other awful stats on the news yesterday and thought this really surely must be the one that gets through to people? Gun shots are now THE LEADING CAUSE OF CHILD DEATH IN THE USA. If it were a disease would Americans be advocating for more diseases?
@tired_angry @tristansnell @shan73198
There’s an old saying “avoid it like the plague” but then we had an actual plague and no one wanted to avoid it….so….do Americans advocate for more diseases?
Let’s just say they don’t shy away from them.
@tristansnell it is a disgrace that our legislators continue to kowtow to the NRA at the expense of the lives of our children. It doesn’t have to be that way…

@tristansnell please always link to reputable sources crunching the data when making claims in a post. In the original post. It is unverifiable echo chamber manipulation FUD without citations. Regardless of truth.

#MastodonTips #CiteYourSources #NoLinkNoBoost

@tristansnell It has not changed due to legal reasons. A Constitutional Amendment is required as every law Congress passes gets struck down by conservative courts.
@tristansnell But just think how big that number would be but for the millions of thoughts and prayers offered up over the last decade
I remember where I was for too many of these 'isolated events' ,they are cuts on my soul. Our nation is broken.

@tristansnell
NOTHING will be done, unless...

Parents of ALL assassinated children

ALLOW and FORCE the PUBLICATION of crime screen photos!

That was one thing that helped Vietnam to end... the carnage ON TV and in NEWSPAPERS and in MAGAZINES and on tic Tok/FB/twitter/Mastodon.

Extremely hard to do, painful, but their little ravaged bodies SO THE MASSACRES.

Emit Till, photo, 1 mom's courage.

@tristansnell it’s time! Ban Assault Weapons NOW!
@tristansnell Even if those inflated numbers were accurate, they have nothing to do with #SchoolShootings. Most children who die by firearm die in #AccidentalShootings; the others are murdered in sui generis situations. Actual #MassShootings, especially school shootings, are extremely rare: "The lifetime risk of dying in a mass shooting is around 1 in 110,154—about the same chance of being killed by a #DogAttack or by legal #execution." #SandyHook

@tristansnell the USA needs to have a long hard think about what’s more important - the constitution written 235 years ago for a different world or the lives of innocent children.

The constitution can and should be changed. It won’t be the end of the problem but it would be a start

@tristansnell

Very sad to see.

Something must be done, they say.

Take away your guns, we say.

Ah well, OK. Let's brush it under the carpet and forget it if we have to suffer.

Only those with some kind of problem that do such things. The rest of us are just fine.

It's part of the constitution after all and will lose votes if we press ahead with such things.

#GunControl #Shooting

@tristansnell I couldn't believe it was 10yrs as I listened to a news report. 😓
@tristansnell And still the total inability to address the correlation between the number of guns circulating to the number of killings .

@tristansnell It should be 25,000+ because we're not done. The number will grow.

#GunViolence is not over.

@tristansnell How can 25,000 children be seen as acceptable collateral damage by Republicans. And they are right. Guns don’t kill people - people who vote Republican do! do! #GunsDon’tKillPeople #GOPVoters

@tristansnell

The Constitution SAYS that Americans have THE RIGHT to kill children. Only You Commies want to take away OUR RIGHTS!!!

(MAGA!!!)

@tristansnell That is an absolutely chilling thought - that so many deaths have happened since, and it still hasn't been enough for any meaningful action.
I don't know what to say except keep fighting the good fight.

@tristansnell

This is what its costs for MAGA cretins to “own the libs.”

@xankarn @tristansnell
The Tree of Liberty must be watered on a daily basis by the blood of other people's children. FREEDOM!
@tristansnell

If nothing's yet been done, then 25,000 isn't the answer, it's just a milestone (of continuing failure).
@tristansnell Twenty five thousand! 😲😲😲🥺🥺🥺 What's the matter with you people?!

@tristansnell One thing that we ought to do is to stop trying to define weapons to be banned on the basis of their shape or other easily evaded characteristics.

We ought to go back to our basic physics and define the bad weapons in terms of the energy (joules) they impart to projectiles over a period of time (seconds). These are easily measured and highly objective metrics.

We might put a few boundaries if the energy/time definition pulls in things that probably ought not to be included, like nail guns.

@tristansnell Amend the constitution.

In the meantime attack the liability shield.

@tristansnell Senators constantly play the blame game while pointing fingers at each other & then they tell us it’s nothing they can do about it. I don’t believe it! If America can fund Ukraine & Israel then they are more than capable to deal with gun violence. Never give up!
@tristansnell I always remember this sad comment about Sandy Hook.
@tristansnell something has been done - gun sales have increased
@tristansnell I believe it was December 14? Your point stands

@tristansnell

Thanks for this! Do you have a source for the 25k figure, ideally with a link?
