One of those great bands I discovered by accident as a kid.

I first heard them on one of my many CMJ samplers; a free CD that came with College Music Journal every month, which was always jam packed with 20 or so new/cool indie & alternative singles. Those CDs were a pivotal part of my music discovery process as a kid.

One had a song on it called “Plenty Times” by The Frank And Walters. A GREAT SONG.
However, due to the band’s obscurity in North America, I couldn’t find THAT particular album.

I did however find a cassette copy of THIS, which was in a reduced bin. I think I got it for $2.99 back then.

Turns out, THIS was the album for me to find. Such a great, fun bunch of songs, lead off by the stellar “This Is Not A Song”.

I adore this album.
And I STILL can’t find Beauty Becomes More Than Life on CD.

Cyndi Lauper, True Colors, 1986 on Portrait

Second studio LP from Lauper, following the massively successful She’s So Unusual which had already gone four times platinum.

Covering “What’s Going On” was, well, a choice. But I love the “Iko Iko” and the originals: the title track still makes me have all the feels, and “Boy Blue” – which was released as a single, raised money for AIDS research. (The whole album is dedicated “with love to my beautiful boy blue” – Gregory Natal.

Lots of guests here, perhaps as a result of her stratospheric success on the first LP: Billy Joel, Aimee Mann, The Bangles, Pee Wee Herman, Anton Fig, Adrian Belew, Nile Rodgers, and Robert Holmes.

If you haven’t seen it I recommend Let the Canary Sing, a documentary on Lauper (currently on Paramount Plus).

My copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is an early Pitman pressing on the Portrait labels with the original printed inner.

It’s December 4th.
That means it’s time to start goin’ hard at the #christmas music.
So, I’m starting off Christmas music season with my favorite Christmas song ever.

David Bowie, zooted off his tits on cocaine, singing with the most deadbeat dad of deadbeat dads.

The whole thing is just so surreal, & seeing the recorded video only adds to the bizarre nature of the weirdest Christmas hang ever.

When Bowie arrives, it’s snowing outside. That’s not snow. David was ripping lines before Bing opened the door, and he accidentally sneezed, sending his holiday stash airborne, in a majestic winter flurry. 😂

Bowie recalled Crosby not being there at all. Just…gone. He said he looked “like an old orange sitting on a stool”.

It’s amazing that two people as far removed from one other as possible could make such bizarre magic.

2024 U.S. Deluxe Edition reissue

A wonderful 15th Anniversary reissue of my favorite of the Dinosaur Jr. 2.0 reunion albums; complete with slipcase, plus 4 extra unreleased tracks.

One of those bonus tracks, Houses, was originally written and recorded by Elyse Weinberg, a female Canadian singer/songwriter. This reissue might be worth owning just for their cover of that.

The original recording from 1969 features Neil Young on guitar, and didn’t see the light of day until 2015.

That aside, everything you love about Dinosaur Jr. is on Farm.
J’s nasty guitar shredding, wonderful fuzzed-out melodic alt rock that never fails to deliver.

They’ve never made a bad record, with or without Lou Barlow.
Because J. Mascis is the fuckin goat.
