Wraz z rozpoczęciem rewolucji industrialnej, średnia temperatura na naszej planecie zaczęła się podnosić. Przyczyną tego był kapitalizm rozwijający gospodarkę opartą na bazie przemysłu i masowej produkcji.
W XIX wieku zmienił się również sposób wytwarzania jedzenia. Bardzo szybko rozwinęły się sposoby hodowli na tak szeroką skalę, że niegdyś drogie produkty od zwierzęce szybko stały podstawą naszej diety.
Ale ile tak naprawdę przyjdzie nam zapłacić za tanie mięso? Dziś, w XXI wieku, bardziej niż kiedykolwiek widzimy skutki zmian klimatu, do których kapitalizm doprowadził w ciągu niecałych 200 lat. Dziś, miliony czujących istot przeżywa całe swoje życie w cierpieniu, tylko po to aby zaspokoić ludzką zachłanność. Dziś, wielu z nas umiera na choroby cywilizacyjne, bezpośrednio powiązane z nadmierną konsumpcją produktów odzwierzęcych.
Dziś, na półkach sklepowych leży więcej jedzenia niż jesteśmy w stanie przejeść. Jednocześnie tak wielu z nas cierpi z powodu głodu i ubóstwa.
