Donald Trump non ha perdonato la decisione della Spagna di non offrire le proprie basi militari agli Stati Uniti per sostenere l’attacco contro l’Iran. E alla prima occasione, nel corso della conferenza stampa nello Studio Ovale, a margine dell’incontro bilaterale col cancelliere tedesco Friedrich Merz, lo ha sottolineato arrivando a minacciare addirittura lo stop a ogni tipo di commercio con Madrid: alcuni Paesi europei “sono stati d’aiuto, altri no – ha detto il tycoon – La Germania è stata ottima. Altri sono stati molti bravi. Il capo della Nato, Mark Rutte, penso sia fantastico. Altri europei come la Spagna sono stati terribili, per questo ho detto a Scott Bessent di rompere tutti gli accordi commerciali con loro”.
Il presidente Usa lo ha ribadito più volte: “Non vogliamo avere nulla a che fare con la Spagna. È l’unico Paese della Nato a non aver accettato” il tetto di spesa per la difesa al 5% del Pil. “Hanno detto che non possiamo usare le loro basi” nell’ambito dell’operazione contro l’Iran, ma “nessuno può dirci di non usare le basi. La Spagna non ha una grande leadership”.
Parole che hanno messo in imbarazzo un silenzioso Merz che ha evitato di prendere la parola nel corso della sfuriata del capo della Casa Bianca.
