A hacker news commentor pointed out that my website says I'd be adding photos of my Sun SPARC servers "soon", and yet two years later there are none (rude!! /jk).
So now I'm going through the whole rigamarole of getting them booting again.

A fresh belt can help with a stuck CD-ROM transport. β¨Still trying to get this sun ultra 5 to boot off install medium - turns out it will support DVD drives, but will only boot from ones that support 512 block transfers (which I now gather mine does not). At least I got the old CD drive working.
