Cuz those RAID controllers are basically SBCs themselves if not entire PCs with socketed ECC-RAM to provide transparent, fast access.

  • The most extreme I've seen was #SGI's Hardware-Rate for "Guaranteed-Rate I/O" in #XFS on #IRIX (using custom hardware and extremely expensive 15.000rpm SCSI HDDs that screamed a like a split hornets' nest)...

@jalefkowit I once had a plumber come round who was inappropriately impressed by the #SGI box on my desk. It was only an #Indy. He should have instead been impressed by the #VAXstation it was sitting on top of.

@lauren @PeterLudemann @not2b I used to joke about how without fail every other generation (Challenge-Origin server and Indigo-O2 desktop era) of Silicon Graphics machines - the power supplies would either just die (no blinking lights) or catch on fire (literal flames shooting out). #sgi #silicongraphics A smart software engineer whose deskside machine caught on fire in his office calmly rolled it outside, removed the disks to save their work, THEN used an extinguisher on it.

I have a Silicon Graphics (Norwegian) PS/2-keyboard, a PS/2 mouse (with ball), a Silicon Graphics Camera and a SGI O2 Workstation Quickstart guide. They are all headed for recycling. BUT, if someone wants the lot I can probably make the effort to ship it for the cost of postage and packaging from Norway to whereever you are.

I'll store it until the end of august.

I got X forwarding working with questionable local firewall rules (restricted to the retro network!) and telnet. 😌

Waiting for the good terminator to arrive and then I'll put it up in the corner with the rest of the retro computers.
