Der Hirschkäfer ist mit 9cm der größte Käfer in Deutschland. Bei dem „Geweih“ der Männchen handelt es sich um etwa 3cm lange Oberkiefer. Mit diesen Oberkiefern nehmen sie allerdings keine Nahrung auf, sondern nutzen sie nur bei Rivalenkämpfen und zum Festhalten der Weibchen während der Paarung. Auf der bundesweiten Roten Liste wird der Hirschkäfer in der Kategorie 2 „stark gefährdet“ geführt. Als Gründe hierfür werden v.a. die Entnahme von Alt- und Totholz, der Einschlag von Altbäumen, die Anpflanzung standortfremder Arten und den ersatzlosen Verlust von Altbäumen genannt.
