U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) has come under fire for comments he made on social media blaming Democrats for the murder of a Minnesota state lawmaker. The senator posted a surveillance photo of suspected shooter Vance Luther Boelter on X with the captions: "This is what happens When Marxists don't get their way," and "Nightmare on Waltz Street," an incorrectly spelled reference to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D). Right-wing politicians and pundits have speculated that Boelter had Democratic ties because was once appointed by Walz to a civilian economic board. The alleged shooter's hit list targeted Democratic officials. His friends say he holds deeply conservative religious and political views, and that he is a President Trump supporter who would be offended to be described as a Democrat. Each week since, I've published a specific policy recommendation. The first one was breaking up the #AdTech industry, on the lines suggested by #SenatorMikeLee's #AMERICAAct:

Next was passing comprehensive privacy law, which would kill off #SurveillanceAds and force a switch to "contextual ads" (ads based on what you're looking at, not who you are):

This is part two of an ongoing, five-part series. Part one, the introduction, is here. Part three, about banning surveillance ads, is here. Part four, about opening up app stores, is here. Part five, about enshrining "end-to-end" delivery on social media, is here. Download this whole series as a...
The #AMERICAAct from #SenatorMikeLee would force ad giants to divest themselves of business units that create conflicts of interest. It's popular, bipartisan legislation - and I *do* mean bipartisan; its backers include #ElizabethWarren and #TedCruz! I wrote about the AMERICA Act and the role it will play in saving news from tech for @eff's Deeplinks Blog last week:
