I cleaned my allotment boots - something I've been forgetting to do for ages - and my mind turned back 60 years to when I was a Cub (Cub Scout, although we weren't called that then) and Bob-a-Job-Week when nieve young boys were launched on unsuspecting householders to perform household tasks for a nominal shilling (5p to you youngsters).
Of course it was often a simple job for a couple of shillings, but sometimes a big job and all you'd get was a single shilling.
I recall frequently polishing shoes but what the other jobs we did I really can't remember.
I'm sure it was a useful thing on a few levels. It supported the Scouting movement by doing useful stuff and raised the profile of scouting, and kept a lot of young boys out of mischief.
I'm equally sure it held potential for disaster on many levels. Young boys randomly knocking on strangers doors, often alone? Young boys scoping out houses for older siblings / parents? Cleaning chemicals?
