Tonight was Backwoods Cooking at #Scouts.

First up, an experimental hotdog sausage wrapped in a thin damper.

Then toasting marshmallows, some did s’mores.

Followed by campfire cones, with their choice of chocolate, fruit, etc wrapped in foil and put in the embers.

The fire-building prowess of some of them was a frustrating watch. There's a few that should be much better by now, they haven’t been in my Cub Pack for a while now. If anything they’d regressed.

Today at the Outdoor Conference 2026 we:

- went on a wander to identify trees
- made char cloth, charcoal sticks (out of Hazel tree), char fungus (out of horse hoof fungus), I helped with the latter (I made the former last year)
- made “hitty sticks”

Tonight the Pack were consulted as to what they wanted to cook & eat at our campfire cooking night next week.

We showed them some of the cookware in case it affected their choice.

We are keeping it simple, the options are quick to cook with minimal steps.

I talked to the Cubs about what constitutes a healthy plate of food & then they played a relay race game after first sorting foods into food groups.

They then played North South East West but with cooking methods.

Scouts tonight is cancelled due to #StormAmy. ⚜️

I was due to help out tonight. It was going to be construction puzzles and I was looking forward to it.

It would also have completed a milestone I wasn’t going for, the one I was being cryptic about earlier in the week.

The “milestone” was attending All of our Group’s Scouting Sections for 3 weeks in a row. I never expected to “achieve” it for 1 week.

Finished packing. Unexpected admin earlier.

Now relaxing while I can as I don’t know quite how much chill time I’ll get over the coming week.

It’s going to be very strange. Being around so many other Leaders and other Adult Volunteers, most of whom I’ve never met, part of teams, large and small. So many Cubs around and none of them from my Scout Group.

There’s a great programme planned. Should be fun.

(Fingers crossed for decent enough weather.)

Two Squirrel Scouts went to an international Scouting event with their Scout Group.

Excellent.

Saw the end of the BBC 6 o’Clock News coverage of the VE Day parade in London today and spotted someone who helped with my Scouts training. Actually both of my Course Leads were at the parade with some Explorer Scouts representing Scotland for Scouts (I saw pictures of them elsewhere). Really great people who I enjoyed learning from.

“We’ve got a new badge, the Chocolate Badge because hard work should be rewarded with something sweet! 😏

Earn yours by mastering the art of campfire s’mores, resisting the urge to eat your supplies, and proving you can hike without melting it in your pocket.

But hurry—this badge is only available today, April 1st! 😉”

Some are calling the Compass replacement “Swan”.🤔

System Without A Name. 😀

(Compass is the name of the recently retired Scouts UK computer system for those outside of the UK.)
