Hard to avoid Finnish accordion. You can search our archives back to the first shows in 2006
For a fine Sami 🪗 collaboration you might like Vildá who played our festival in 2019 and again at the #VancouverFolkFest in 2022
They were interviewed by some young indigenous programmers on our show here

🧵5/ For those interested in #NordicFolkMusic and #Ethnomusicology I wrote an essay in 2012 about the #Sami people of #Scandinavia and their traditions. The Sami are known for their closeness to nature, and their singing and music reflects that. This is kinda a rambling blog post - back when I was still enamored with YouTube and going nuts populating my playlists. I admit to being disappointed with all things Google of late, but I’ve put too much time & effort into my channel to abandon YT now. I’m not an expert, just an aficionado; please forgive any errors or omissions. This is it for this thread.

In 1884, Prince Roland Bonaparte organized an anthropological expedition to Northern Norway (Finnmark) and Sweden to document the Sámi people. Most of the photographs were taken by G. Roche, the expedition’s photographer. Unlike modern photographers who often capture candid moments, Roche and Bonaparte used formal 'en face' and profile shots, a quasi-scientific approach aimed at recording physical features. The collection features over 100 portraits, with many subjects identified by name, including Jol Andersen, Anna Hurri, and Niels Larsen Pilto. Subjects are often dressed in traditional Sámi clothing, called gákti, and posed against neutral backdrops or within rigid frames. Some portraits even include measurement tools or number plates, reflecting the era’s interest in racial classification. Beyond portraits, the expedition documented Sámi dwellings (lavvu), boats, and the Arctic environment, providing a broader cultural and historical context of life in Northern Norway during the 1880s. This collection remains a significant historical record of the Sámi community and their traditions during the late 19th century.

🧵 The first #MariBoine album I bought was “Idjagieđas”.
Its last track is a healer, perhaps even more than the others.
(No, I'm not going esoteric here, singing won't blast your tumor away, funny that I feel the need to say this at all. Yet what we all can do with is some more mental well-being in this crazy world, in which visiting any news website is enough reason for falling into depression.)
Idjagieđas is also available from Bandcamp, and here's the song: https://mariboine.bandcamp.com/track/big-medicine-f-pmod-lkkas
