@numenini.bsky.social Hi Nicola, thanks for documenting your explorations of these #chalkstream tributaries of the #RiverCam - glad to see some trout!
Seeking a map for context, I found these two helpful:

Our Catchment – Cam Catchment Partnership

🎤 Ah, the eternal quest for #accountability in #software departments - because why let business partners have all the fun? 🚀 Spoiler alert: after a scenic trip down the River Cam, the conclusion is... well, it's still a problem. 🤷‍♂️

James Shore: The Accountability Problem

"City councillor Elliot Tong (Green, Abbey) said: “The River Cam is currently having an existential crisis. Without urgent action, both Jesus Lock island and Baits Bite Lock island will fail. This could significantly lower the water level and expose residents to centuries of filth that has sunk to the bottom of the river after being dumped there."
He put forward a motion to the full council on 24 July calling it to write to the secretary of state now explaining the need for funding for the repairs. His motion also proposed that responsibility for overseeing the River Cam should be transferred to any future unitary authority that covers Cambridge following the planned local government reorganisation.
But an amendment to the motion was put forward by Cllr Martin Smart (Lab, King’s Hedges), removing these points."

Cambridge cultural contrasts.

On Jesus Green, the 5th River Rights Festival was held by the Friends of the Cam. A very twee, middle-class gathering with earnest choir songs about climate change.

On Midsummer Common, there's the Midsummer Fair. A gaudy, lairy celebration; the youth look like they're auditioning for TOWIE.

At the boathouses, a winning college rowing crew celebrates with a bottle of fizz after the May Bumps.

The press has reported on fears of clashes between rowers and fairgoers, highlighting the clash of cultures.

Cambridge in Autumn 23 - River Cam was gorgeous yesterday!
#photography #cambridge #naturephotography #nature #rivercam
The #riverCam went quite high last weekend. Highest I've seen it for some years. The peak was during Saturday night, but here's a photo from mid afternoon before then. The boat is looking unloved and I really need to spend some time cleaning her.

After being told that "cleaned water" has been recycled into the #RiverCam testing has shown that "#Phosphate level is massively higher than the acceptable maximum and is stifling the #River. Often agriculture is blamed but in this case it is clearly related to sewage. This points to serious neglect by #AnglianWater and the #EnvironmentAgency (EA).."

Phosphate pollution

This is an extract from a press release issued 10th January 2023 by one of our members, Richard Pavitt, who is also a District Councillor. Laboratory tests of water samples from the upper reaches of the Cam not far from the river’s historic source confirm the worst fears of local environmentalists. Phosphate level is massively… Continue reading Phosphate pollution
