COUNTING (AND PRINTING) THE HILLS OF LISBON - From the 17th century onward, it became common for writers to describe Lisbon as a city spread over seven hills, mirroring Rome. The truth is, the actual number of hills is somewhat debatable. Visitors throughout the years have counted them in different ways. Instead of a map, I made a 3D print of three of those hills.

The results we get from modern phones are starting to get really good and could be used in a professional context, but I haven't seen any make use of color calibration with color charts yet.
Smitha 🌸🌋🎻But it has so many other use cases. It’s used in self-driving cars, it’s used to capture environments for filmmaking, it’s also used to capture crime scenes and in disaster recovery…and these were the use cases I knew of back when I still worked on this tech. Now there are photogrammetry and AR measurement tools built natively into phones.
This is one of those unsung technologies that’s provided so much benefit, as well as joy.

I worked on a suite of 3D/2D reality capture tools years ago. It is SO COOL. I also recall photogrammetry (extrapolating a 3D model from a series of 2D photos) being demo’d at SIGGRAPH in 2009ish.
We focused on AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) workflows - capturing 3D models in hours instead of spending weeks drafting them, using drones to create photogrammetric captures of large spaces, etc.

They’re using realtime laser scanning at the gymnastics finals?!?! Scanning the gymnasts throughout their routines, and then - WITHIN MINUTES - providing an ANIMATED, HI-RES, 3D scan of the performance. (That’s how they’re doing the Matrix-esque replay shots.)
Tech is amazing sometimes.
