Open social media has a new fan: U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna. The congressman for California's 17th Congressional District appeared on Kara Swisher's "On" podcast last week and talked about Bluesky, @surf, and the importance of being able to construct your own social graph, take your followers where you go, and opt out of algorithms. Here's the full episode:

@Catwoman69y2k I've concluded that much of the "join xyz platform for updates" mentality comes from the one-two punch of both web browsers ditching RSS and Atom and Google ditching Google Reader.
Say a free software project maintainer writes a development blog. The audience may or may not already have an RSS reader installed. This means the project maintainer might feel responsible for recommending a reader application for all 7 major platforms (Windows, macOS, desktop Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome extension, Firefox extension). Otherwise, people will land on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_feed_aggregators and experience analysis paralysis.
I guess one disadvantage of protocols is that platforms have tended to do better at landing pages than protocols. Is there a page to which a blogger can refer visitors who have never used RSS before?

@Coreyartus Followed!
Oh, wow! The German IT Planning Council decided yesterday to consolidate a bunch of disparate communication tools into a unified system based on Matrix and MLS.
Here's the record of their decision and the other options they considered: https://gitlab.opencode.de/it-planungsrat/fit-ab/zapuk/-/blob/main/Zielarchitektur/Architekturentscheidungen/ADR-0011-Kommunikationsschicht.md
@travisfw
> "using the internet" should always mean engaging directly with other individual humans, with nothing but routers in-between.
We need to un-shackle the internet from its current #monopoly #SurveillanceCapitalism #feudal lords, and return the net to the proper #WorldOfEnds.
