The Slow Death of the Power User

There’s a certain kind of person who’s becoming extinct. You’ve probably met one. Maybe you are one. Someone who actually understood the tools they used. Someone who could sit down at an unfamiliar system, poke at it for twenty minutes, and have a working mental model of what it was doing and why. Someone who read error messages instead of dismissing them. Someone who, when something broke, treated it as a puzzle rather than a betrayal.

Ah yes, because nothing screams "power user" like relying on a comma and question mark to remember terminal commands 🤦‍♂️. The pinnacle of technical achievement: typing "question" to summon the almighty AI oracle, because typing "man" was just too mainstream. Bravo! 🎉

This is long, but excellent, and captures a lot of my thinking exactly - "The Slow Death of the Power User":

TL;DR - Big Tech and other interests have successfully turned most people away from understanding their computing devices, and we all suffer as a result. I strongly recommend reading it for anyone who cares about understanding what their systems do, or what to do when they go wrong, or who likes to build things.

It's from a couple of months ago, but I only discovered it when it went by in my feed here a few days ago.

The Slow Death of the Power User — fireborn
