Not What They Seem, Phaedrus, c. 444–393 BCE

“Things are not always what they seem.” – Phaedrus, c. 444–393 BCE

Many ask me: what's your favourite #Plato dialogue? I like Symposium. #Phaedrus is sublime, but mostly descriptive/narrative. In terms of dramatic tension, the most accomplished work to me is #Protagoras. It's also the first text ever to enunciate the law of contradiction. #philosophy #logic #books

“PHAEDRUS: He gave me that impression, Socrates, and of course you know as well as I do that the men of greatest influence and dignity in political life are reluctant to write speeches and bequeath to posterity compositions of their own, for fear of the verdict of later ages, which might pronounce them Sophists.”
#Phaedrus, #Plato

This is probably the best articulation of why Socrates refused to write and why Plato invented the dialogue.

Enthusiasm and Divine Madness - The Hermetic Library Blog

Hermetic Library Fellow T Polyphilus reviews Enthusiasm and Divine Madness: On the Platonic Dialogue Phaedrus [Amazon, Abebooks, Publisher, Local Library] by Josef Pieper, trans Richard Winston, Clara Winston. Had you told me I could enjoy an interpretation of Plato’s Phaedrus written by a German Neo-Thomistic philosopher noted for his sympathetic translation of C.S. Lewis, I would have been quite […]

I know I’ve posted much #philosophy content lately, but I do promise some mathematics soon! This reference from FS Blog is part of an essay I’m writing regarding math/compsci crossover concepts….

Plato's Argument Against Writing

The people who invent something new, create a new tool or technology are not necessarily the people who are going to understand what the social impact of those inventions are going to be.
