I've made 10,000 posts on Mastodon since I joined just under two years ago.

Thanks and thoughts:

- I'm grateful to @admin for running this instance. I made a small contribution to the running costs, and you should do the same.

- Thank you to all who follow and interact with me.

- Thank you to the people I follow for providing so much thought provoking, entertaining, informative, and beautiful content.

- I wish more of the academics and journalists I followed on Xitter had migrated to Mastodon.

- There are times when I feel I am just talking to myself here.

- There are many topics on which I have opinions but which I do not discuss here, either because I am not sufficiently well informed to make a constructive contribution to a discussion, or because for some topics I do not think Mastodon is an appropriate forum for their discussion.

- Partly on account of its current rotten government and the appalling way in which it is currently waging war, Israel is an unpopular country on Mastodon, or at least in the parts of Mastodon that I see. Nevertheless and regardless of how many people here take offence, I will continue to defend the right of Israel to exist. A two state solution, Israel and Palestine recognized as two states living alongside each other, is not utopian and is the only way to ensure peace and dignity for all.

- I use hashtags and so should you!

- I boost a lot because I think it makes Mastodon more interesting. Am I right in this?

I've been thinking about the phrase "virtue signalling". I have found this phrase in it's common parlance form very effective at communicating the thing. But then I did a double take. Virtue signalling in it's common form refers to inhabiting the appearance of virtue without engaging with the virtue. But on the internet, it means saying a thing that is considered good and right by the people one wants to like them. I understand the idea behind it, but what about people who are doing the thing to communicate to folx that might not know? Are they also virtue signalling? How does one determine the difference between propaganda and clout seeking? Why is there such a strong assumption towards clout seeking? I contest that the problem is in treating internet connections on hyper-awareness platforms as complete people. Every word said on these platforms is propaganda. It is each our own personal propaganda expressed upon a liminal space. I think these spaces become much more navigable when that filter is applied. I have seen a tenth of the posts in the local, and mostly only at a glance. The ones that are strong are the ones that inspired me to seek out deeper text. Propaganda is the mode of communication by which we attempt to convince others of [blank]. Most of the people I interact with on here, I will never meet irl, so the only functional purpose of my words here is propaganda. I hope you enjoyed this wall of text.
