The week before last I had the opportunity to deliver a "flash talk" at a work meetup. I opted to present a summary of what I've learned while adding support for Finger and Gopher protocols to the WordPress installation that powers DanQ.me (I also hinted at the fact that I already added Gemini and Spring '83 support, and I'm looking at other protocols).

The presentation is a shortened, Automattic-centric version of a talk I'll be delivering at Oxford Geek Nights tomorrow. If you're in or around Jericho, Oxford tomorrow, come say hi!

Yesterday's Internet Today! (Woo DM 2023)

At a work meetup a fortnight ago I presented a "flash talk" about how I've made WordPress into a CMS for Finger and Gopher as well as the web, and what I learned by doing so.

I'm hoping to be speaking at Oxford Geek Nights 53 (22 Feb 2023, https://oxford.geeknights.net/)!

My working title: "Yesterday's Internet: Today!" I'm hoping to drum up some local interest in retro tech like Gopher and Finger as well as modern homages like Gemini and Spring '83!

> You feel it, don’t you? They’re all crumbling, the platforms of the last decade. It’s unsettling, but/and also undeniably exciting. Tall trees fall in the forest, and light streams down, nourishing places it hasn’t reached in ages.

> Indeed, I want to make a case for protocols — for whole little social networks — as investigations and experiments. It doesn’t take a million users, or a thousand, or even a hundred, to learn genuinely interesting and important things: about the protocols themselves, about new ways of relating online, about people in all their glorious weirdness.

🧵 I want these aesthetic windows (to other instances, #hashtags) to be somehow informed by #Spring83 https://macaw.social/@junosz/109384315959620280
juno de luto (@[email protected])

now i want to be able to follow an instance. not their firehose-local feed, but rather a daily (or hourly) digest. #AlgorithmHeresy: for each instance i'm following, each hour give me a random post from the list of the top 5 posts from that instance, ranked by - honestly idc how it's ranked! fine, do it reverse-cron if you insit. or by boost count. or by follower count. or fully random. just spice things up a little!

Macaw-Social

@junosz Yes.

And I want to see it laid out like a bulletin board, in one screen.

I've spent the summer playing with Robin Sloan's #Spring83 protocol but it's only now, as its nights get longer, that I've finally finished the key functionality of the server I wanted to implement - STS-6:

Spring '83 Came And Went

As the sun begins to set on Spring '83, I finally finish implementing my server for the protocol, way too late for anybody to pay attention or notice.

Finally got around to implementing a super-lightweight (~20 lines of code, 1 dependency) Spring '83 key generator. There are plenty of others; nobody needs this one, but it's free if you want it:
