Attention old rose enthusiasts: (And by 'old', I do not mean the age of the enthusiasts but rather the age of the rose variety.)
About a decade and a half ago, I purchased a Tropicana rose (a variety first released in the early 1960s) because I remembered my mother having one in her garden when I was a child. After two years, a severe winter killed the rose above the graft, but the rootstock survived, and I have let it grow as it wishes. It tends to be a 'leggy' plant with long, prickled stems that mostly grow out of the root. (Rather bramble-like in its growth.)
This year it has produced quite a number of blooms. The blooms are a deep red, which open up wide to reveal bright yellow stamens. The flowers are not particularly long lasting. The variety occasionally produces hips, but not consistently. This rootstock is clearly an old rose variety. It blooms only in the spring.
Does anyone know the name of this rose variety?
The Vicar’s GardenToday’s joy is another historic rose, Rosa Alba Semi Plena. It was most likely “The White Rose of York” in the Wars of the Roses in 15th century England. Richly perfumed.

Before the freeze early tomorrow morning, a last look at the Duchesse de Brabant, a favorite of mine. Its cupped pink flowers have a cabbagey roundness to them, as if they were picked from a luscious old rose painting.

Ko Ess au 🇳🇿😷Mōrena, More beauty to start the day. Albertine flowers once and for a long time. Hardy and a favourite. There was a large bush of this on the way to school when I was young. I would stop to smell the apple-y fragrance. Got to watch the thorns though. Great fence jumper deterrent. Have a happy day!
