the names of the six deceased at Maunganui campsite have been released. there were two 15yos among them. 😔 also a body was found, believed to be a man who got swept away in a river. and others have been evacuated from their homes.

Watched the 2019 doco on Ralph Lauren on the plane back. Lauren sold the American Dream in his campaigns. He relied on a version of his nation’s image. In a dreamland, sure. So what is our equivalent? In the 2000s, I could think of one—a faraway centre of creativity and imagination surrounded by natural wonder. I just saw *seven* male korimako (NZ bellbirds) at our sugar water feeder all *at the same time*. That might be a house record.

Here are two of them.

Plus, there was a juvenile being fed by its mother nearby.

That's one up-side of grey stormy weather. It brings in the birds to our garden feeders.

There's more climate-related trouble In Gisborne. More than 30 houses have been evacuated in Onepoto and parts of Te Araroa due to the risk of landslides from the hills above.

Our country is being led by people who are actively rolling back climate change mitigation, at a time when the real-world effects are biting NZ badly.
