“The Chiribiquete are table top mountains located deep in the Colombian Amazon and host many rare endemic species. Helanlin Xiang's work shows that the Chiribiquete Mountains likely upifted before the Early Miocene and could have acted as a long-lived stepping stone, connecting species in the Andes with the Guyana Shield…”

We have a new paper out!
Using a combination of #carbon and neodymium isotopes, we traced the exchange of water from the Pacific to the Indian #Ocean south of Australia over the #Neogene and how orbital forcing modulated it.

DEVINCENZIA, from the new video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFap...) I just made on the Neogene period, was a huge bird that used to live in South America in that period #devincenzia #neogene #paleoart #naturalhistory #terrorbird

We're going to need a bigger boat... 🦈

A new study estimates that the iconic #Neogene shark Otodus #megalodon may have reached lengths of up to 24.3 meters—nearly 19% larger than previous estimates–and was more slender than earlier comparisons with modern white sharks suggest.

Image: Tentative body outline for Otodus megalodon. The exact shape, size, and position of most fins remain unknown. An adult human is used for size comparison, but we emphasize that the two species never coexisted.

So we looked into the mutation patterns differentiating between lineages and species using #HaplotypeNetworks focussing on the #Philippines. Because it's well-known that they are peculiar being a continental fragment that came around quite a bit during the #Neogene.
Cradle or crossroad for this largely neglected plant genus.

Preferably done using plastid data, oocytes, which pass their chloroplasts to the seeds don't travel as far and as easy as pollen.

Neogene (Geological periods 🌍)

The Neogene is a geologic period and system that spans 20.45 million years from the end of the Paleogene Period 23.03 million years ago to the beginning of the present Quaternary Period 2.58 million years ago. It is the second period of the Cenozoic and the eleventh period of the Phanerozoic. The Neogene is sub-divided into two epochs, the earlier Miocene and the later Pliocene. Some geologists...

December: The Zanclean Flood. 6 million years ago, the movement of the continents cut the Mediterranean off from the oceans. Since more water evaporates from the Mediterranean than it receives from rivers, this resulted in the sea drying up and becoming an incredibly deep, dry, salty lowland. Until 5.3 million years ago, when the Strait of Gibraltar formed and the entire sea was refilled in a massive flood.

A day after an earthquake caused a landslide that allowed the ocean to start flooding into the great dry abyss to the east, the water's power violently widens the gap and now a thousand Amazons flood into what will soon be the Mediterranean Sea again. The local animals have come to a large rock that will one day be named Gibraltar for safety and a view. Except the #Pelagornis, they're more interested in the fish falling down.

#Neogene

The world turned colder and dryer in the Neogene, leading to the spread of large grasslands, like these South American ones. Phorusracos, a large terror bird, has caught a Thoatherium on the edge of the forest they both live in. South America was an isolated continent for the duration of the Neogene, leading to a quite unique fauna.
