Times of India | Rush at petrol, diesel pumps, govt says no
AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.
Mumbai experienced an unprecedented surge in demand at petrol and diesel stations on Sunday May 10‑11, as drivers queued for fuel amid worries that the West Asia conflict could disrupt supplies and after Prime Minister Modi urged citizens to curb consumption. Pump owners reported sharply higher sales—one outlet selling nearly 12,000 litres versus its usual 8,000 litres on a Sunday—and longer waiting times for both fuels. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, however, assured the public that crude inventories remain stable, refineries are running at optimal capacity and there are no fuel shortages or imminent rationing, adding that the government has implemented measures to keep supplies uninterrupted despite global energy‑supply disruptions.

Energy crisis, the Indian prime minister calls for austerity: “Work from home, avoid foreign travel and buy only local products.”
By mid-March, the gas shortage caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz had already been heavily felt in India, with restaurants forced to revise their menus due to the inability to guarantee long cooking times and fry food. Now, almost two months later, it is the scarcity of oil and its derivatives that is alarming Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He launched a Sunday appeal for austerity: “Avoid traveling abroad, reactivate home working and virtual meetings as during the Covid period, use public transport or car sharing and buy only local products for a year.” He then urged families to reduce their consumption of cooking oil: a healthy but also “patriotic” choice, he said. The country imports large quantities of vegetable oils, resulting in a outflow of foreign currency that New Delhi can no longer afford.
“The priority at the moment for our country is to drastically reduce oil consumption,” the prime minister explained during an event in the state of Telangana, where he inaugurated new highways and railway lines. “Given the rising global costs of oil and diesel, we must also reduce gold purchases and save foreign currencies,” he added. India is one of the few countries in the region that has not increased the prices of oil and diesel for domestic use and has not rationed supplies. However, it has increased the cost of GPL, the most used fuel in the country for cooking.
India is the second largest importer in the world and 60% of the supplies usually come from the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The government has had to authorize the use of more polluting fuels, such as coal, wood and kerosene, out of necessity. The National Association of Restaurant Owners of India advised its 500,000 members to reduce their hours, stop offering dishes that require long slow cooking and frying, and use lids during cooking to save energy.
