Born as #EdgarNahoum in #Paris in 1921, his parents were #Jewish immigrants from #Salonica, a city that had been home to #Greece’s largest Jewish community until #WorldWarII. (Nearly 90% of the community, some 54,000 men, women, and children were eventually murdered in #Nazi #deathcamps.) A precocious student, #Nahoum spent his days in libraries studying #German philosophers like #Hegel and his nights in cinemas studying French films directed by the likes of #MarcelPagnol.

Yet everything changed, including his name, come #France’s defeat and #occupation by #NaziGermany in 1940. Making his way to the Unoccupied Zone, the 20-year-old Nahoum, who had been a pacifist before the war, soon joined both the banned #CommunistParty and the #FrenchResistance."

A leading intellectual light has gone out. Edgar #Morin, French sociologist, anthropologist, ecologist, philosopher and filmmaker whose work spanned epochs and disciplines, Resistance fighter, and knowledge omnivore, died on Friday in Paris. He was 104.

He wrote 120 books, created the genre cinema verité, hung out with Sartre and Camus, and as a member of the Jewish Resistance in WWII, he had thoughts about Israel and Palestine.

“Until his final days, Edgar Morin remained attentive to the world, to others, and to the great human issues that nourished his thinking, the void he leaves behind is immense. But his courage, his loyalty to people and to ideas, his moral rigour and his hope continue to accompany us." his wife, Sabah Abouessalam Morin, said.

Quand Edgar Morin débarque e 1958 à Plozevet dans le Pays Bigouden avec une centaine de chercheurs en sciences humaines il conclut « Il n’y a pas d’homogénéité géologique, géographique, agricole, économique, sociale, politique, religieuse dans le pays Bigouden. »
 Je crois qu'il n'a pas compris la réalité profonde de ce pays, l'un des plus attachants et des plus originaux de Bretagne.

“Amante de Machado y de Serrat, #Morin explicó en varias ocasiones que la caída de Barcelona a manos de las tropas franquistas, en enero de 1939, lo marcó de manera indeleble porque fue el presagio de la tragedia que se abatiría sobre Europa poco después. Con 15 años, había enviado ya paquetes de ayuda para los anarquistas de la columna Durruti.

La lucidez de Morin a una edad muy anciana impresionaba. A sus 101 años publicó un libro extraordinario, De guerra en guerra, en el que abordó todos los conflictos en los que había sido testigo, desde la II Guerra Mundial hasta la invasión rusa de Ucrania.”
