@ReneRebe I wounder if #Steinberg reacts to #Audacity modernizing the same way they did to #AVID's continued #Enshittification of #Sibelius...

Granted, #competition is good and given that #Steinberg needs to convince people to use their suite over #FLOSS is good for everyone because it forces everyone to "up their game"!

(And yes, I still hate myself for not having bought a perpetual Hobbyist License for #Eagle when #CadSoft was still an independent company. I should've paid that €125 back in 2008!)

@innocence well, they switched to an #AssholeLicensing model, maing the reference implementation now a worse decision and put the Matrix Protocol in danger.

And yes #AGPLv3 is an asshole license as it is inherently incompatible with a shitton of #IP laws and thus (oftentimes) cannot.be complied with.

Sustainable licensing at Element with AGPL

We’ve chosen to switch our development to AGPL now that the wide scale public sector use of Matrix has attracted the attention of huge system integrators and similar.

@astraluma TBH, the fact that #Autodesk was allowed to de-facto #monopolize #engineering #Software is an utter failure of #regulators like #FTC & @EUCommission !

  • They should not have been allowed to do so in the first place...
@emu because #Apple wants to #monopolize #iOS #Apps and act as "(benevolent)" dictator...

@Dreamweaver @nixCraft

  • That's due to #assholeism by the #devs & #publishers: If people refuse to play & buy that shit, they'll have to change.

  • I've yet to see any concrete examples for real - plus the "incompatibility" can be mitigated by converting from #OOXML to #OpenDocument.

  • Yes and no. Certainly #Linux support is often tied to specific #certified systems but any firm that can afford to license #Autodesk's Products can also afford to buy a Workstation like a #hp Z-series and a #RHEL subscription, because the users are far more expensive than the #Hardware and #Software they use. I'm pretty shure #LinusTechTips pays more for #cleaners or a #janitor even if both are externally subcontracted part-timers per year than for Adobe,,,

  • OFC the fact that Autodesk et. al. were allowed to de-facto #monopolize #EngineeringSoftware is a failure by #FTC, @EU_Commission and other #AntiCartel #MarketRegulators to intervene...

    • And even if we have something that requires #Windows, I can assure you from my own experience that a #KVM-based #VM [regardless if on a #Workstation or a Serverfarm like a #Proxmox cluster - with or without passthrough to dedicaded Hardware] is way less labour and pain-intensive than #BareMetal just from the #Backup & Restore aspect alone that it's worth the investment...
    WHY do I pay Adobe $10K a YEAR!?

    #AntiTrust regulation against #BigTech would actually be a MAJOR thing.

    Comparable to what happend in the 19th/ early 20th century in the #USA.

    "The #ShermanAct also makes it illegal to #monopolize, conspire to monopolize, or attempt to monopolize a #market for #products or #services."

    https://www.justice.gov/atr/antitrust-laws-and-you

    Even "attempt to" .. hui.

    But I really, really can't see any situtation how that's gonna happen within #NeoLiberalism.

    Nooo fucking way!

    The Antitrust Laws

    @jwildeboer the problem is that this ain't a real #RightToRepair bill and corporations like #Apple can literally #monopolize #repair and just choose to absurdly overcharge customers and quote i.e. the full MSRP for a new device for a screen replacement...

    Personally, I think this is an effective #Downgrade because it doesn't have any #FRAND provisions to provide access to manuals, schematics, software, tools and parts including ICs...

    @Elucidating A license used to #monopolize the commercial offering of a #Software (#AsAService) whilst claiming it's #OpenSource...

    Kinda like #SSPL does and also how #RedHat and #grsecurity act by basically restricting access to #OpenSource...
