More US history we don't know: John Sherman's anti-trust act. The Other Sherman’s March.
"Though the National Telegraph Act has been often overlooked even by specialists in the field, it deserves to be remembered as the kind of law Sherman hoped to enact in 1890, had he been given the chance."

The Other Sherman’s March

The U.S. Justice Department recently hauled Google into court for violating an 1890 federal law designed to forestall the unjust consolidation of economic power. Known today as the Sherman Act, this law was proposed by Ohio lawmaker John Sherman to prevent sprawling financial combines like Standard Oil from using their formidable command over the production, distribution, and sale of a good or service to bankrupt their rivals and block new entrants from the market. Though the Sherman Act is now over 100 years old, it remains a hammer in the toolkit of U S.

Oh damnnnn. First time in a long while that Sherman antitrust lawsuit has been in my feeds for not a tech related stuff. I have always thought it fishy bullshit that students have to give information about their noncustodial parent they are possibly estranged from because they might be secretly giving them money 🤷 also college board is definitely definitely a monopoly asshole for other reasons too. anyway yes gonna watch this closely. #academia #shermanact #highered https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ilnd.465846/gov.uscourts.ilnd.465846.1.0.pdf

Worth recalling that the monopolies that developed in the 'Gilded Age' provoked antitrust and other competition legislation. Famously #standardoil was broken up under the #shermanact. So there is precedent for this !

Enforcing long-held laws: Google is a monopolist, violating Sherman Act s. 2

Congratulations to the US Department of Justice on its first scalp in its antitrust lawsuit against Google.

I know this is all over the place. But I have to toot this on my time line:

"Google loses massive antitrust lawsuit over its search dominance"

"Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,”

US District Judge Amit Mehta wrote in Monday’s opinion. “It has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act.”

IT FINALLY HAPPENED !!

Google has an illegal monopoly on search, judge rules. Here’s what’s next

Google has violated US antitrust law with its search business, a federal judge ruled Monday, handing the tech giant a staggering court defeat with the potential to reshape how millions of Americans get information online and to upend decades of dominance.
