Thousands of activists are expected to converge in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention, hoping to call attention to abortion rights, economic justice and the war in Gaza. Activists say they have learned lessons from last month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and are predicting bigger crowds and more robust demonstrations in Chicago, a city with deep social activism roots.

I didn't think he was concealing the huge camera. It was the media brand that was hidden.
Pardon my skepticism. I used to give a lot of deference and leeway to media personnel, but they've ruined it for themselves and everybody else.
@rameshgupta our news cameras used to be prominently branded (about 20-40 years ago) but tend to be plain these days. Operators may or may not openly carry ID cards (there's no requirement to have one in the UK to film on the street).
A lot of the time they run unbranded because they are freelancers hired at relatively short notice (there are very few in house staff in media nowadays) - but there's also the chance they are working for right wing channels and want to hide that as well..
@rameshgupta Also you are also 100% correct to be sceptical and wary.
*Any* random bootlicker can turn up in "media circus" bit of any protest action with a broadcast quality camera (they aren't /that/ expensive second hand), set up as "news agency" indistinguishable from "legit" media and gather as much footage as they wish to hand to fash or cops (there may be freelancers already getting paid doing this).
@rameshgupta when I worked in broadcast engineering there were numerous layoffs amongst British PSBs (public service broadcasters) due to new tech and ruthless capitalism leading to regional TV companies devouring each other.
A *lot* of newly redundant engineers, and camera operators taught Police in Britain and Nothern Europe to use broadcast quality cameras to surveil protests and activism as part of evidence gathering, they also advised on how to improve town CCTV schemes..

@rameshgupta one thing to be wary of in near future is when cops combine their portable radio schemes - which at present look like obvious cop kit and even the digital radios look like a giant 1990s mobile phone with modern LTE smartphone technology.
Both USA and European agencies are working on this.
Detectives will then be able to use any smartphone (usually ruggedised sets, but normal one would work) for comms and be much harder to spot when working covertly..
