The maple trees are coming to life! Springtime in the northeast means it’s sugaring season! Here’s a little tune I created to honor the tradition.

Sugar Shack Shake, by Dave Nelson

Tapping trees today. About 3 weeks later than I like to start, but I haven't missed out on much and the forecast looks great for the week. #ottawa #maplesyrup

This maple syrup season has given me whiplash. The first 2 weeks had little flow. The last 2 has been a flood. We don’t have room in the fridge so Stacey turned our biggest snowbank into a makeshift cooler. It’s melting.

And since I don’t want this to look like a post advertising seltzer, I’m including a picture of me, 18 years ago, giving a presentation in a fake sugar shack complete with an ancient evaporator. And yes, there are a lot of pink winter clothes. 😂

Well, silver maples seem to be done. Test boil didn't taste the best. Pulled those taps, flushed lines as I pulled and there's a few norways and a sugar left on them (10 total), and the 96 other sugars should keep going for a while. Too bad, they were really pouring today.

It’s time to tap the trees at Rideau Hall and start collecting sap
Adam Miller, a grounds technician at Rideau Hall for the National Capital Commission, explains how to tap trees and where the maple syrup ends up.

Ok.
I have over 90 gallons of frozen sap I need to process into #MapleSyrup. Hoping that the delay in processing didn't screw it up.... We had some warm days before the freeze happened.

Finished up and bottled my second small batch of Maple syrup. This batch is much lighter in color than the first, I think because it was mostly boiled at a lower temperature on a hot plate. #MapleSyrup #MapleSugaring
Likely a break from boiling for a bit given large amounts of snow currently falling outside.
Using some of my old homebrewing gear to make maple syrup. It's not efficient, or cost effective, but it's cool, and we are in new England. #NewEngland #MapleSyrup
