How Zohran Mamdani Can Fix the Housing Crisis

> Robert Putnam argued in his landmark 2000 book, Bowling Alone, our civic infrastructure had disintegrated. The once-conformist crowds had dispersed, leaving behind a social void. Hunger for peer approval may have been misguided, but having no peers was far worse.

Americans Are Abandoning the Communal Meal

Consuming food all by oneself is an anomaly in the history of human civilization, a deviation from millennia of tradition. And more and more Americans are doing it.

The #GlobalSumudFlotilla seemingly breached Israel’s #blockade of #Gaza while provoking an #Israeli response that triggered anger and reprisals from various governments.

In #JacobinMag, Branko Marcetic reckons it’s one of the most successful acts of #civildisobedience in recent history.
I'm not sure about that. I think it is too early to tell.

The Sumud Flotilla Has Succeeded in Making Israel a Pariah

The Case for Social Drinking

Americans are trading bar culture for wellness apps and mocktails. But despite alcohol’s many shortcomings, our national sobering up is not a simple cause for celebration. We’re also losing social spaces and traditions in an increasingly alienated society.

It seems that the only news-news site I read anymore is Jacobin, and then only the articles on unions.

https://jacobin.com/2023/11/uaw-strike-contract-fain-victory

I think because it's actually positive news.

Two things I got out of this article:

I learned what COLA is, (Cost-Of-Living Adjustment) and with my union gearing up for negotiations next year, this would be pretty fucking nice since I don't think we get it. More worried about attrition, but my other worry is wages vs. Inflation so...

The other thing that I did not realize till now was that these UAW wins are going to be used as a marketing tool to the nonunion workers at other car companies to show what the union can offer. I am fucking stoked for a unionized Toyota, Tesla, etc.

I also liked Fain's comment that the next contract negotiations will be with the Big Four or Five instead of Big Three, implying that the unions are what make Ford, GM, and Stelantis big.

UAW Strikers Have Scored a Historic, Transformative Victory

With its successful strike, the UAW has broken with decades of concessions, won on pay and workplace democracy, and launched a new national labor leader. There’s much more organizing to be done, but this is an unmitigated victory for the entire working class.

Read a good article about the WGA tentative deal: https://jacobin.com/2023/09/hollywood-writers-guild-tentative-agreement-wga-strike?mc_cid=cf4a8a7696

Hits on the positiveness of the deal, the fact that we know fuck all about it for now as there is an agreed upon press blackout, and how they might still not be crossing the picket lines since SAG-AFTRA is also on strike. Also through in a bit about the UAW.

Also, IATSE and the Teamsters’ Motion Picture Division's contracts are up next year. Since they didn't cross for WGA, there is likely reciprocation that will happen.

One thing that struck me was a quote from show writer Alex O’Keefe, "This strike has to be used again and again as the shiny Hollywood example of how to beat these global mega-corporations. We had a Hot Labor Summer; we need a season two next year. We need the workers of America to unionize and strike. And Hollywood needs to show up for them when they do.” My contract with SEIU is up next year. Might just have another hot labor summer.

After 146 Days on Strike, Hollywood Writers Have Reached a Tentative Agreement

Late last night, the Writers Guild of America announced they have reached a tentative agreement with the Hollywood studios. The union’s negotiating committee is calling the deal “exceptional,” but it’s now up to rank-and-file writers to vote on it.

I must be feeling a little better about politics. I started reading #jacobinmag again. Glad there is a bit of positive news in it, even if it isn't for the US. Will be interesting to see how things in North Ireland go after the most recent elections.
