"The SVB depositors just had to whine on Twitter and make a few calls."
---
Dylan Gyauch-Lewis .> "As soon as corporations and the wealthy run into trouble, elites trip over themselves, discarding both law and precedent, to rescue them," Gyauch-Lewis wrote, noting that federal regulators had to classify SVB's collapse as a "systemic risk" to the financial system—a disputed characterization—in order to legally guarantee deposits over $250,000.
.> For contrast, Gyauch-Lewis added, "consider student loan forgiveness. The legal justification is clear as day, and the authority itself is used regularly. According to the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, the Education Department can forgive student loans as it sees fit in a national emergency."
.> "At bottom, the core reason SVB's depositors got bailed out had little to do with morals or even financial risk," Gyauch-Lewis argued. "It happened because they had rich and powerful friends with the ear of the president's chief of staff. Broke students don't. The students have to organize and campaign for decades to get something far worse than what they wanted, and for that to hang in the balance at the Supreme Court. The SVB depositors just had to whine on Twitter and make a few calls."

'The Billionaire Bailout': FDIC Chair Says the Biggest Deposit Accounts at SVB Held $13 Billion

"The bailout really did protect billionaires from taking a modest haircut," one observer wrote in response to the FDIC chief.

> The Madisonian principle, then, is that government.. must provide special and additional guarantees for the rights of one class of persons, property owners.

My feeling is that #ElonMusk is similar #BillGates and other techno rich people. If the railroad generation suffered 'robber barons' mabye we suffer from 'IT barons'. Hundreds of years have passed and we still suffer under a feudalism of corporations. This #fuedalism is run by members of the #YARM club: Yet Another Rich Moron. #Moron in the #RobertMHutchins sense of not thinking.

> ... the 25 richest people in the US paid a true tax rate of just 3.4% from 2014 to 2018. The average taxpayer..pays a true tax rate of 13%. It wasn’t always like this.. wasn’t that long ago that the ultra-wealthy paid their fair share in tax; during the second world war, the federal income tax rate peaked at 94% and was still 70% three decades later. The rich haven’t just gotten richer, they’ve also gotten.. more selfish.

The rich haven’t just gotten richer – they’ve also gotten a lot more selfish

US billionaires now own a combined $4.7tn, according to a new analysis – but to Elon Musk, since he doesn’t have a yacht or own a home, that’s totally OK

> ... a #bureaucrat is little else than a glorified counter. The French word bureau first meant a cloth for covering a reckoning table, then the table itself, then the room in which the table was kept, and finally the office and staff that ran the entire counting room or house... the word... has come to mean a person who by training, commitment, and even temperament is indifferent to both the content and the totality of a human problem. #NeilPostman in #Technopoly on #richguy #bureaucracy #dams
> ... on some level, all bureaucracies work on this principle: once you introduce formal measures of success, “reality”—for the organization—becomes that which exists on paper, and the human reality that lies behind it is a secondary consideration at best.
