These are examples of some generated terrain - Parkland, Forest, Pine Barrens, Badlands - and how they look with cities auto-generated on them. Differing terrain has it's own plant life with different conditions.
Pine Barrens are hilly and lead to more spread out environments, while the steep cliffs commonly found in Badlands lead to more remote settlements connected by roads. Low lying areas tend to be flatter and naturally end up being more suitable for building on.
