Thames Barrier Industrial Area, Charlton Riverside. In the late 70s a friend's great-uncle took us on a site visit to the half-constructed Thames Barrier. It was impressive, for sure. Yet a short stone's throw, and nearly half a century away, let's marvel at the Thames Barrier Industrial area - a place of motor vehicle repair shops, scrap yards and West African Churches. At least six West African Churches.




All over London, West African Churches have been occupying otherwise abandoned cinemas, theatres and halls. It's all part of the centuries old demographic churn. It's good that these large buildings are being maintained. The two large cinemas by the Woolwich Ferry are now both West African Churches, for example. Less good, however, is that London's ever diminishing industrial space is being occupied by places of worship. Over recent decades, manufacturers and craftspeople have seen their factories and workshops disappear under vast housing blocks, and now they are competing with churches for the few spaces that remain. Local authority planning officers seem happy to approve this change of use, and presumably these churches have the advantage of charitable status. The humble industrial estate is seen as dirty and menacing, and few mourn their loss. But when you need a carpenter or auto electrician, where are you going to find one? Eh!!???
