This photo of our May 2026 protest outside the Chinese #embassy in #WashingtonDC shows something that we first noticed in April. The imposing #fence surrounding the embassy now has coils of #BarbedWire at the top. Is it to keep outsiders out, or to prevent people inside the embassy from leaving? We can only speculate.

Whatever the reason for the unfriendly architecture, we will continue to meet outside the embassy each month to #protest the ongoing #genocide of the Uyghurs in #Xinjiang (#XUAR).

There's a reason (https://thenewleafjournal.com/b/DWq) for that but count me as pro-goose (despite that one time a goose bit me in the 1997-99 area when I was giving it bread).

Storing Rain in Garden Fences

Photo: Judith Jockel/The Guardian. In the Netherlands, Harry den Hartigh installs a fence that also serves as a rainwater store. Not to stereotype, but the Dutch strike me as exceptionally good problem solvers. (Maybe the bloggers at Cook and Drink can give an informed opinion.) Most of us know how they built their country on a delta and how today advise other places threatened with flooding. Senay Boztas writes at the Guardian that the Netherlands is now experimenting with a new way to […]
