The #FSBIOutreachGrant recently supported a plastics workshop and community beach clean-up in Tobago, led by Charlotte Robison-Smith. Cardiff University, local NGOs and fishing communities came together to remove masses of plastic debris, mostly consisting of discarded fishing gear from valuable reef habitats, contributing vital data to global marine litter databases! #MarineConservation #GhostNets #PlasticPollution #microplastics #SEMPR #InternationalCoastalCleanup #Tobago
A net a kilometer: Drones successfully identify #ghostnets along NT coastline
To date, 83.74 km of remote coastline has been surveyed, detecting 72 nets of varying size and condition. The detected ghost nets ranged from small 50cm fragments to large intact #nets over 5m long, with some partially buried and barely visible from ground. Several of these buried nets were like icebergs—much larger beneath surface—requiring a winch to extract them and load them onto the vessel.
