Older male humpbacks sire more calves as populations recover from whaling

New research from the University of St Andrews published in Current Biology has shown that the role of age in male humpback whale reproduction has changed as populations recover from centuries of exploitation. Whaling drove many large whale populations to the brink of extinction. But its legacy runs deeper than a drastic decline in numbers. Decades after commercial whaling ended, its impacts continue to shape whale populations, influencing not just how many whales there are, but which males get to reproduce.

Shrinking cold-water habitat means more whales get caught in nets, research finds
Humpback whales are more likely to get entangled in fishing gear in years when rising ocean temperatures make cold-water habitat harder to find, according to new research published Wednesday.

@WePlanetAus: Documents have revealed that the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is about to certify the world’s biggest krill fishing company as “sustainable”– even though it takes vital food from penguins and whales to turn into health pills and pet food.
This reckless move would legitimise a fishery that many conservationists say should be shut down entirely. [2] But the decision isn’t final yet! — Sign!

Risk of whale entanglement in fishing gear tied to size of cool-water habitat

New research shows that, off the U.S. West Coast, humpback whales face a higher risk of getting entangled in fishing equipment during years with lower availability of cool-water habitat, where the whales feed. Jarrod Santora of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S., and colleagues present these findings in PLOS Climate.
