Even when allowing for various kinds of biases, authors found that #SpeciesDiscovery through #environmental sequencing vastly outpaces traditional #species #recovery in a strongly increasing trend over the last 5 years. The authors conclude that dark #fungi form a defining feature of the #fungal kingdom.
Do all fungi matter? Yes, new study argues
Fungi that do not form fruiting bodies and that we cannot grow in the laboratory cannot be given scientific names. And so they are essentially dismissed from further scientific and societal consideration. A new study in MycoKeys finds that these more or less invisible fungi may be the dominant life form in the fungal kingdom. Does it make sense to ignore them? No, the study argues.
