Fresh off of reading the phantasmagoric The Spire, I wanted to keep going with Golding. There were anecdotes about the importance of this book in his catalog and to him personally - a tale of the last days of the Neanderthal, as Homo sapiens rises, and a dramatic conflict between a band of each. Our author made considerable effort to write the book from a Neanderthal’s POV, crafting the language to be slightly like ‘the other’ may have been. Descriptions of their encounter with Sapiens were challenging because, of course, the behavior and rituals of a modern human were foreign to them. This filter continued to clog my apprehension of the protagonist’s experience. I would have never understood Golding’s feature of making Neanderthalis telepathic had I not scanned some brief reviews prior to reading the book, for example. Descriptions of season, topography and emotions were all curtailed. My fear is that I missed many good nuggets until the vocabulary was deployed ‘just so’ and, by then, I was uninterested in circling back and re-reading swathes, hoping to find clues I overlooked on the first pass. All to say, I think this is a book that requires effort the first time and *then* still requires an immediate, second pass. To know it is really worth the effort remains unknown to me as I’ve moved on.

Major Historical Threats to American Democracy & in 2025 – History Analysis by Perplexity Pro – September 10, 2025

Major Historical Threats to American Democracy 2025

The Civil War Crisis (1850s-1860s)

The most severe threat in American history came from the convergence of polarization over slavery, racial conflict, and economic inequality between North and South. This led to actual secession, civil war, and the temporary breakdown of democratic governance.

Reconstruction Collapse and Jim Crow (1870s-1890s)

Following the Civil War, violent suppression of African American voting rights through terrorism, lynchings, and systematic disenfranchisement effectively ended democracy for millions of Americans for over half a century. The Wilmington coup of 1898 exemplified this threat—elected officials were forced to resign at gunpoint and replaced with white supremacist Democrats.

The Founding Era Crisis (1790s)

Political polarization nearly brought down the young republic as the Founding Fathers split into hostile partisan camps, creating what one scholar called “partisan warfare” that threatened the nation’s survival.

Current Threats Under Trump’s Second Term (2025)

Significant Attacks on Electoral Integrity

  • Suspended voting protections meant to expand voter access
  • Dismissed critical voter access cases despite DOJ obligations
  • Issued executive order baselessly accusing the Biden campaign of election interference
  • Required proof of citizenship to vote and mandated changes to mail-in ballot practices

Undermining Rule of Law

  • Pardoned approximately 1,500 January 6 insurrectionists, including violent offenders, on his first day
  • Demanded DOJ seek evidence to prosecute the previous administration
  • Attempted to freeze trillions in federal funding through illegal orders
  • Challenged birthright citizenship guaranteed by the Constitution

Executive Aggrandizement and Corruption Risks

  • Granted unelected Elon Musk unprecedented access to classified information and power over government departments through DOGE
  • Rescinded ethics commitments for executive branch personnel
  • Implemented Schedule F to potentially replace thousands of career civil servants with loyalists
  • Created new avenues for potential foreign influence through business interests

Authoritarian Tactics

  • Used rhetoric labeling political opponents as “evil,” “enemies,” “criminals,” and “lunatics”
  • Made anonymous violent threats against federal judges reach “unprecedented highs”
  • Weakened election infrastructure by disbanding the Foreign Influence Task Force
  • Created a “climate of political fear unprecedented in modern American history”

Ranking of All Threats to American Democracy

Tier 1: Existential Threats

  • Civil War Crisis (1850s-1860s) – Actual dissolution of the Union and armed conflict
  • Trump’s Second Term (2025) – First time all four democratic threats converge simultaneously
  • Reconstruction Collapse (1870s-1890s) – Systematic disenfranchisement lasting decades
  • Tier 2: Severe Institutional Threats

  • Watergate Era (1970s) – Presidential criminality and constitutional crisis
  • World War II Internment (1940s) – Mass violation of civil rights under executive power
  • Founding Era Crisis (1790s) – Near-collapse of early democratic institutions
  • Tier 3: Significant But Contained Threats

  • McCarthyism (1950s) – Suppression of political dissent and civil liberties
  • Various wartime restrictions – Temporary but concerning expansions of executive power
  • The systematic nature of current threats—targeting elections, rule of law, civil liberties, and institutional checks simultaneously—creates what experts call “an especially grave moment for democracy.”

Unlike past crises that involved one or two threats, this convergence makes the current period extraordinarily perilous.

Anti-infection ideologies are the greater culprit here there and everywhere.

Face it, you can't morph basic societal issues into an antiseptic treatment without skewing into bigoted ideologies.

The only people making it possible do it by removing bigotry and going straight for the cause of harm. For example, if you want to rid the world of terrorism it's probably best not to become the world's greatest terrorist group ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have no words about the current global societal crisis beyond those of Omar Barghouti:

As we have learned from the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, ending state, corporate and institutional complicity in Israel’s system of oppression, especially through the non-violent tactics of BDS, is the most effective form of solidarity with our liberation struggle.

To defeat Trumpism and the rising wave of fascism worldwide, broad-tent, inclusive, anti-racist alliances are more important than ever. This is not just an ethically desired strategy to unite racial, climate, social and economic justice movements to build a critical mass of people power. The current threat to humanity shows that the intersectional unity of those struggles has truly become an existential need.

To stop Trump’s Gaza plans, Palestinians need solidarity and support

An Arctic meltdown is accelerating global warming: How will we adapt?

In 2016, nearly 200 world leaders pledged to do everything possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Since then, policymakers across the globe have designed countless laws around the assumption that warming would never cross that threshold.

Elon Musk ascends as political force beyond his wealth by tanking budget deal

Elon Musk’s role in taking down a bipartisan budget deal shows his ascendance as a political force. The social media warnings from the world’s wealthiest man preceded President-elect Donald Trump’s condemnation of the measure negotiated by GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson. That combination effectively killed the stopgap measure that was designed to prevent a partial shutdown of the federal government. It was the first major test of Musk's influence since Trump was elected.

Notes on #UAP Discussions : When we here the words "existential threat" and review history of observations prior to 2017 and then re- review multi- messenger documentation post 2017 actions that "might" be described as "aggressive" fail to meet any realistic bar wrt #ExistentialThreats".
Books or accounts that perpetuate an existential threat narrative do not pass go, do not collect $200. They go directly to the circus tent. Full stop. End of story. Selling books is what it is. Have a nice day-
