This week I'm participating remotely in a @LISA data processing workshop. As a parent with a small child (but not currently on parental leave), remote participation is the only option I have available. Even if the experience isn't perfect, it's better than nothing and I am grateful for it. It's worked pretty well.
When you organise an "in person only meeting" you exclude broad swathes of people who could otherwise participate, many of whom are far less privileged than I. You're also asking everyone to travel (probably involving flying) and emit lots of carbon just because you couldn't be bothered to set up Zoom or Jitsi and do some low-effort things to make remote participants able to join in.
