Researchers built a new DAC sorbent from upcycled wood waste. The clever bit: sunlight releases the captured COβ‚‚.

Lignin in the material enables photothermal heating β€” no external energy for regeneration. That matters because sorbent regeneration is DAC's biggest cost.

Early-stage, but cheap feedstock + solar regen could reshape DAC economics.

I came across the 2013 paper "The thermodynamics of direct air capture of carbon dioxide" by Klaus Lackner https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0360544212006901. It describes the theoretical minimum energy needed to separate CO2 from the surrounding air. One interesting takeaway is that it is energetically less costly to "skim" CO2 from the air (capture a small fraction of the CO2 in the air and then moving on to more fresh air). This means that direct air capture is not necessarily much more energy intensive than scrubbing exhaust from smokestacks. In the scrubbing use case, you want to get all the CO2 before adding the exhaust to the atmosphere.

Vox makes the case for marine CDR. Equatic plans world's largest ocean CDR plant in Singapore.

Record deal week: Boeing 40K t via Carbonfuture, Tapestry Γ— Climeworks 10yr, Canada $100M coalition, Germany's first €98M CDR budget.

Cornell: ERW could remove 1.1 Bt COβ‚‚/yr by 2100.

MOFs are where sorbent DAC gets interesting. MOF-74 captures COβ‚‚ at ambient concentrations β€” no fans, no heating.

Nobel chemistry going to reticular chemistry isn't just academic prestige. It's validation that the molecular tools for CDR are Nobel-worthy.

Svante just acquired Carbon Alpha Corp, a CDR project developer. This is vertical integration hitting the DAC sector β€” when your capture tech works, you need permitted sites and development expertise. Easier to buy a developer than build from scratch.

Expect more of this as the market matures. The companies that own both the technology and the project pipeline will have a structural edge.

Climeworks picks Calgary for its Canadian HQ and plans a large-scale DAC facility in Alberta. Smart move: abundant clean energy + deep geological storage make Alberta ideal for direct air capture at scale.

CDI portfolio company β€” we wrote about why they're one to watch:

STRATOS Phase 1 coming online Q2 β€” that's 500k tons/year of DAC capacity. Still small vs what we need (~10 Gt/yr by 2050), but this is where the cost curve starts bending. Every first-of-kind plant makes the next one cheaper.

Climeworks is a CDI portfolio company β€” we've watched them scale from a rooftop in Hinwil to Mammoth in Iceland, the world's largest DAC plant.

DAC costs are dropping fast. ~$600/ton now, targeting under $300 by 2030. The physics works. Now it's an engineering and scale challenge.

ENEOS β€” Japan's largest oil refiner β€” teams up with AirMyne to scale Direct Air Capture. This is worth watching: Asian energy majors entering the capture game, not just funding it from the sidelines.

DAC partnerships are shifting from PR exercises to actual deployment commitments. The geography of CDR is broadening fast.
