A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence

Like any complex technology, Artificial Intelligence has its roots in a number of fields. From philosophy to computer science, mathematics to linguistics, tracing the history of AI and automation is a difficult business. The field was officially named in the 1950s, but ideas about automated machines have existed since long before then. This is a history of the development of Artificial Intelligence from some of its earliest philosophical and theoretical inceptions through to modern day […]

Colourful food in colourful fields

Looking for bright colours is easy in a tropical area. But finding exciting colour contrasts are the real fun.

Along the small inlets and in between the rice fields along Siem Reap river down to Phnom Krom and the Tonle Sap lake, some local restaurateurs build these small huts on stilts in the background. A family or travel party can order food and drinks, and relax in the shadows with a view to this tranquil landscape.

It really is a soothing experience with the hammocks provided.

Or maybe guests can have a small walk pre or post lunch, just to look for colours, shapes, flowers or plants, and birds or other animals.

Alive or not.

Oof, this doesn’t seem like it was that long ago.

30 years ago, February 10-17, 1996, Garry Kasparov beat the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue 4 games to 2.

“I’ve had some further pangs of #DeepBlue just in the past few weeks, thanks to the #Claude Opus 4.5/4.6 and #GPT-5.2/5.3 #CodingAgent effect. As many other people are also observing, the latest generation of #coding agents, given the right prompts, really can churn away for a few minutes to several hours and produce working, documented and fully tested #software that exactly matches the criteria they were given.

“The #code they write isn’t any good” doesn’t really cut it any more.” — #SimonWillison
