The Petitio Principii Fallacy in the Kaldor-Hicks Principle, Law & Economics, and Cost-Benefit Analysis:

A prime example of intellectual conformity (a.k.a. cowardice) in conventional Economics

Depending on the particulars of the #utilitarian argument, the case can work or not. If it is preference/desire satisfaction utilitarianism the case for capitalism follows from that any mutually beneficial transaction improves welfare. Capitalist employment is that assuming full consent. My response to such arguments is debunking #consequentialist #ethics. And rejecting collective preference satisfaction as the good in favor of freedom.

@ArthurI what do you think of this resolution I came up with to the consequentialist judgement paradox you came up with?

The left should change the argument. Complex systems like economies are difficult to predict. Any complex #consequentialist argument against #capitalism can be refuted by citing a lack of evidence that the proposed postcapitalist alternative produces better outcomes, and the risks of meddling. Rights-based theories avoid this critique. #Leftism must demonstrate that capitalism contradicts common sense principles of justice.

This week's fifth and final post applies the reason-responsive #consequentialist view of rational inquiry to shed light on bounded #rationality, the Standard Picture, and the #epistemology of inquiry.

Thanks to #DavidThorstad for giving us a peak inside the book Inquiry under bounds (#OxfordUniversityPress 2024).

I identify as a #consequentialist and a (negative) #utilitarian, I suspect that existence is probably not worth it because of the asymmetry of #qualia, and yet I have no intention of ending my own life (and I think that’s rational). Why?

When we’re #children we don’t really understand what suffering is, and we don’t even know that living is a choice. So we live.

#Teens and young adults famously tend to get closer to one of two poles: either they’re disappointed, miserable, or lost (some of those do end their lives), or they are having a great time: they’re at their prime, disease and pain are unknown to them, they discover pleasures, etc (those are happy to live).

We #adults are usually so entangled in relationships by this stage of life that even if/when we decided that non-existence beat existence for us, we wouldn’t want to cause more suffering to those who love us and those who depend on us. So we (usually) live.
